Hardwood Usage Reference

Can you guys point me to a good reference for characteristics and project usage of hardwoods? I have something like that for plywood in one of my many magazines but I need one for hardwood also. I would prefer something I can download from the web.

You may find some of this of interest: http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/FPLGTR/fplgtr113/fplgtr113.htm . The title is "Wood handbook--Wood as an engineering material", prepared by the Forest Products Laboratory, which is a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

It is huge and pretty opaque in spots, but has some interesting stuff also.
