When i first started woodworking i was adamant about wearing hearing protection, but sort of let it slide lately. Today I bought a comfy new set and am back to my old (quiet) ways. What about you guys?

I keep two pair of ear muffs in the shop, near where I use the router and also by the MS. These areas are at opposite sides of the shop so I am usually not too far away from them if needed.

After a lot of years on an acft flightline and with a 60% hearing loss in one ear from events long ago, I use it quite often. I now find loud noise and humming/droning noise produced by motors to be irritating, so it helps my concentration and comfort. I don't have to worry about silence, tho, 'cause the tinnitus always gives me "noise" to keep me company.
Please protect your hearing: the side effects from loud and continuous noise can be more than deafness.

Besides in our workshops I can think of several other places where we need hearing protection.
1) When using outdoor power equipment. I gave ear plugs to my neighbor that refuses to replace the blown out muffler on his lawnmower and leafe blower. He will not use them, but I sure do.
2) At a far too many movie theatres as they set the sound levels WAY TOO HIGH. While I expect a big KaBoom with a bomb blast, I do not like being SCREAMED at by all the actors for 90 min or longer.
3) If I need to go into certain stores, even if for just a short time where they blast *&^%$# music all day. Poor kids that work there really do suffer from hearing loss after a month (or less) of working there.
4) At boot camp (does not apply to me) when the drill instructors get angry.
I have to confess that sometimes when I really should wear protection (all types included) that I don't always do so.  at myself
