If I remember, I think someone may have posted something on this before. I really would like it if Ridgid or some other good tool company made SPUD wrenches in several sizes. I want a junior and a senior size one along with my old timer 12 inch one. I know there are a few other tools that could be used, but I really just want true SPUD wrenches only in more than just one size. I do have a pair of Channellock groove & tongue pliers with smooth jaws and they are helpful.

I've never needed to use a wrench on a potato but hey... if there's a tool for that, I want one!!

Actually a SPUD wrench is much like a heavy duty pipe wrench only it has smooth jaws so as not to mar up a fancy nut or such. I laugh at the name myself. Maybe this picture of one will be helpful. Click on the thumbnail (little picture) for a larger picture of one.

I've always wondered why they call them spud wrenches... any ideas? They look nothing like a potato, and they're useless for anything to do with a potato unless you're a big Gallagher fan.
I's probably something boring, like the unions on cast iron radiation are called spud or something...

I went to PA college of tech. in Williamsport PA for BS hvac/plumbing I was taught the different of a spud wrench and a monkey wrench. I will provide links with picks of spud wrenches and monkey wrenches.

In the plumbing trade a SPUD wrench is like in my earlier picture. A MONKEY wrench while similar is a much lighter duty tool.
Examples of a Spud <aka> Smooth Jaw wrench:

heh. You posted a link to erection wrenches. I guess it's one thing to need a wrench for a potato but I sure as hell don't want one of THESE in my house!!! :(

The wrench is so named IIRC because it was meant to be used on toilet spuds, the fitting that connected the tank to the bowl. Was WAY before my time but there are still plenty in service I'll bet. There were both rear and top spud designs.
A hex wrench is another choice for smooth jaws and large capacity. They are available in a couple different sizes I think.
Hey Josh, that's what the RIDGID Site needs... a history section/timeline showing the evolution of RIDGID Plumbing Tools over the years.

Another nice addition to the tool collection is the Channellock #415 tongue & groove pliers with smooth jaws. They are very much like the #430 other than for having smooth jaws. Right now their (www.channellock.com) web site is down, but here's a little info on them
Capacity: 2"
Overall length: 10"
