View Full Version : What about these router tables?
Anyone ever use one of these router tables. They are all basically the same design. I think they are rather neat and considering getting one. Notice that the Grizzly and ShopFox have a switch mounted on the right fron leg.

all three look pretty slick, but a little pricey.
I built a new one out of scrap and a slab of maple butcher block top I had left over. Adding in a Delta power feed, You can build your own for less than any of those three.
Mine has 2, Porter Cable 5 speed, 3 1/2hp routers. I built it just for making doors, styles and rails. I can pull one fence in seconds and have it ready for anything else I need to do. Table top is about 32" square.

Looks just like the one I posted about from ENCO in Jan 06;

Pricey for sure! I can't see paying that much (300~400 bucks?!?) for something you can make yourself, especially since it'd be a woodworking project - ain't that what we're all here for? :rolleyes: I just made a router table that attaches to my 3650, spent $35 for materials (which included a piece of Plexiglas much larger than required for the insert, so I can make router jigs from what's left of it). I want to add some type of leg supports and a miter track, so that'll be a little more money.
Router Meister Pat Warner (http://www.patwarner.com/) has lots of router stuff he'd like to sell you, but he recommends woodworkers make their own router table. He'll sell you the plans, of course, but there is plenty of free info available. You can spend more than $50 and make a table that's more accurate than mine is, but it was a fun project, I learned some things (one reason for Pat's recommendation), and I'm sure I don't have to explain to anyone on this list the satisfaction I have from making it myself.

I could make one . . . but due to my wife's severe environmental sensivities I cannot use any products that contain glue. That includes plywood, MDF, finger jointed wood, etc. The offgassing of formaladhyde (sp) from the glue makes her sick. I know that she will not spend much time in the shop . . . but I will still get the dust and stuff on me.
I have thought about getting a couple of pieces of 2x10 spruce and building a tabletop . . . but I do not believe that it would stay level for long.
So that is why Im looking at buying one of those units . . . no offgassing.

Zuki, what kind of table saw do you have? If you want a nice table, that will cost you less than those you linked above (but still a pretty penny!) consider the Bench Dog ProMax. I am absolutely thrilled with mine. It doesn't take up hardy any space, since it replaces one of the TS wings. Cast iron, dead flat, and gives you the flexibility to use your entire table saw surface if you're routing something really large, just by feeding it through from the other side (NOT climb cutting). Also, I know this is somewhat petty, but I LOVE using the new MagSwitch featherboards, and this cast iron table allows that. You can place one wherever the heck you want in about 3 seconds of setup.
Here's a thread where you can see some pictures of the ProMax installed:

Alternatively, there is a non-cast iron product that's very similar and significantly less expensive.. that I can't remember the name of (I think it includes "Mule" in the name.. perhaps someone else remembers).
I have the TS2400L portable contractor's saw . . . don't think it would work junkie.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
I just checked Bench Dog and they do sell the ProMax with an end cap for those who want to put it on a cabinet. Just the ProMax alone is $449 Canadian.
