I have a problem with my Rigdid Miter Saw. When I'm cutting my miters, I'm often getting a "burning" smell, and the ends of the board are getting burned. Recently while cutting some miters inside of a house, I actually set off the smoke alarm! I tried changing the blade, which did not seem to help. The wood I am cutting is basically oak and pine, not particularly thick or hard. Is this normal? Is there an easy solution? Thanks for any help, I'm not diehard miter saw user, so this is a rookie question, sorry!

Sounds like you may be feeding the saw too slowly into the wood, OR you are somehow pushing the wood towards the side of the blade when cutting. Are both pieces burned after cutting or just one?

usually it is just one side that is burnt, i believe, although I've never looked that closely.

Is the blade on backwards?
how many tooth blade are you using.

Like others have said, be sure you are not pushing the work into the side of the blade. And since you said you changed the blade and it still burnt, enough to set off a smoke alarm, I too believe you may have the blade on backwards.

Try looking at the picture (click the thumbnail) and note how the blade teeth look. Is this how your's is? If not, you might have the blade on backwards like others have stated. Just a thought.

After checking the blade.....

Another thought.
I use to get burning with my old 10" (when I first started
using a power miter saw) by putting to much
down pressure when coming down on the saw when makiing
a cut, I guess you could call it to much feed.
I quickly found out, Let the saw do the work.

Don't Take much pressure at all with my my ridgid 12" slider.
Cuts Like budda!
