Im doing a small remodel for a client, building 4' kneewalls, sheetrock, etc. My question is this...Do i need to install a vapor barrier between the sheetrock and the studs? I live in the Atlanta area. Thanks in advance!

If it is an outside wall you need the vapor barrier.

but if your insulation is faced and it is a vapor barrier you don't need it

Their is an existing kneewall, but its only about 1' in height?! Just enough room to get 3 1/4" base and a receptacle! Thats why i ask cuz this wall is just basically an add-on. It will be about 3' from the outside wall. Now what say u , and thanks guys! :D

Sounds like the space is already sealed and you are essentially adding an interior wall so no vapour barrier is required. Assuming you do not perforate the barrier when adding the wall

Thanks wbrooks, i have to relocate the electrical outlets into new wall so im gonna have to penetrate old vapor barrier. Guess ill have to add a new one on my wall. Thanks for the help guys!

Since the old wall will be hidden you could pull that foot of drywall down, relocate all your electrical and plumbing if necessary then put the insulation back and seal with new vapour barrier and TUC tape (a bit of acoustic caulk at the bottom and top too). Now you don't need to worry about sealed electrical boxes or fooling with wrapping steel boxes in vapour barrier and TUC taping around them to keep the seal in tact.

Vapor barrier in Atlanta???

In a word: NEVER.

Unless it is CODE do NOT install a vapor barrier.

PM me for details - too tired to type this one out now...

The guys in ONT are correct given their geography as would folks from, say, Minneapolis. HUGE difference between ATL and YYZ.

But NEVER in GA.

Never.
