band saw question

I'm curious, in the recent review in WOOD magazine, it says this band saw is made in China. Is this true? I've had mixed luck with chinese tools. A good experience with a HF drill press, and nightmare with a chinese made Delta jointer. :confused: I'm interested in buying this saw because I have a good size credit awaiting me at HD, and of course, I want a bandsaw. Not alot of reviews of this bandsaw out there.

Someone else will have to tell you where it is made, but I can tell you I bought one and I like it, seems to be a good saw, haven't had it long but so far so good. I am going to change the top knob and put a crank for blade tensioning, haven't had any response here yet, whether it is put on with a roll pin and if I can remove it, but that is a personal choice, just makes tensioning and release a lot faster.

Well... I went to HD to get some stuff. Looked at the saw and found that WOOD Magazine is wrong. The BS1400 is made in Taiwan.

I have the Ridgid BS1401 BS. It is a really nice machine. Excellent fit and finish. Plenty of HP for resawing. Blade tracking is perfect. customer support from Ridgid is without equal. No complaints only kudos from me.

Hi: as a point of interest Wood states China as
"Country of assembly", actual parts "may" have been manufactured in another country(s).

Well... I went and bought it today. I haven't assembled it yet but can't wait. FYI, Wood is wrong. It plainly states "Made in Taiwan" right on the ID Plate.

The BS1400 we tested was assembled in China, a fact confirmed by Ridgid officials before publication.

The BS1400-0, the previous model was made in Taiwan. The current model, BS1400-1, is made in China and features a 3/4 TEFC motor (as opposed to the older model which had an open frame motor).

What's a TEFC motor? Is that universal or induction?

Induction. TEFC stands for Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled. Dust can't get inside.

One other question about the bandsaw. In your opinion, is the Ridgid, at 3/4 hp, powerful enough to resaw? I'm looking to get a bandsaw by Xmas and have it narrowed down to the Jet and the Ridgid. The Jet, according to numerous reviews, is almost identical to the Ridgid but has 1 hp, but it's also about $100 more expensive.

Okay, another question...how can these saws be virtually identical?

I forgot to say that I have the Ridgid jointer, planer and benchtop saw. I'm very happy with the complete line so far and would like to stick with Ridgid, but by the same token I would like to get the best "bang for my buck."
