In the price range you mentioned, the Ridgid jointer ranks right up near the top of the list.

If you own any Ridgid tools you should read this. (http://www.ridgid.com/Tools/Power-Tool-Warranty/)

The Ridgid jointer is a solid design, and typically well liked. The wide base makes it a bit more difficult to put on a mobile base, but there are aftermarket options available.

There are comparable alternatives from Jet (http://www.amazon.com/JET-708457K-JJ-6CSX-Horsepower-230-Volt/dp/B00006ANS5/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1205417232&sr=8-2), Grizzly (http://grizzly.com/products/6-x-46-Jointer/G0654) has two (http://grizzly.com/products/6-Jointer/G0452), Delta, Sunhill (http://sunhillmachinery.com/SM-150%20Jointer.htm), Rikon (http://woodcraft.com/tab/001.aspx), and Craftsman. Sale prices fluctuate...most get near your budget. Some offer full enclosures, wheels, and/or stem mounted switches. Some are slightly wider, and/or a bit taller. Check out as many as you can and go with whichever makes sense to you....all should do a good job.
