For those of you who have met my son Jared he has a new job. He resigned as a police officer earlier this year and is now a helicopter pilot in the Gulf of Mexico. Here is the helicopter he replaced his squad car with.

My oldest son is an Army helicopter pilot and warned him against taking the job. I guess it can be kind of dangerous doing emergency evacuations from the platforms during storms. Of course the more danger the more thrill for Jared.

Mark, how far, on average, is it from land to the oil platform?

My understanding is they can be anywhere from 2-miles to over a 100-miles but it seems the average is 20-miles.

They're actually pretty good plumbers as well (and use both drum & sectionals).
