Manhole covers vary in size and weight depending upon the location. During my years as a Telco Lineman in NYC I pulled plenty of those covers and inner pans to work below. I'm willing to bet the outer manhole covers weigh close to four hundred pound and I can't imagine anyone stealing those in particular but in many places the covers weigh much less and are a target. Leaving any manhole open poses all sorts of hazards to drivers, pedestrians and animals. They can be spot welded shut but a good shot with a hammer breaks the weld. I hope this trend quicky stops and part of the solution would be to prosecute the folks buying these things.

I don't know the weight, but they did mention they were getting a whopping $10 for them at the scrap yards:eek:

Hmmmm.... you say hitting those welds with a hammer will break them?
How big a hammer does it have to be?
Somehow I can't imagine going through all that work (and risk) for a mere $10, but I never could figure out what makes petty thieves do what they do.
I've noticed a few covers that appear to me hard rubber... I think Corning is on a budget or something like that.

Plumberscrack,
How was your dinner last night? Did you have to call first and make an "Indian Reservation?"

Actually they have had a problem in Las Vegas with thieves stealing the wiring from the lights on the streets. They use a pickup truck to pull the wires from the conduit in the middle of the night while the lines are still hot.:eek:

this is something for all those that steal copper you know those tall poles along the streets well there is clean #1 copper up there feel free to take as much as you want :rotflmao1::rotflmao1::dance::dance:
ps dont tell them but some one just tried this and well you know the rest of the story :itsover::rotflmao1::dance::dance::way-to-go::loser::loser:
and now he is :boring::boring::boring::boring2:
now that is one way ti get rid of them
Working in The Bronx, we had thieves stealing lead shielded copper telephone cable off of the apartment buildings. We usually replaced the cable one time around the building as it was and if they stole that we would place poles around the building and install galvanized metal guard where it was low enough to grab. The newer cables contained very little copper compared to the old stuff, it was hardly worth taking but a big expense to replace.

Noe people are stealing cadallidic (sp?) converters here because of their platinum content, which is $2,000 an ounce!
Some guy out here got robbed 3 times before he installed a video camera and reported it to police.

I just don't get how someone can walk into a scrapyard with manhole covers or several cadalidic converters or copper pipe that was clearly cut out of a house at a couple of sections-still soldered together and not be questioned? Maybe the employees of the scrapyards are getting a cut too? I just don't get it.
