power saver...scam or worthwhile investigating?

I just saw a TV commercial for a device called "powersaver"

I AM NOT SELLING OR HAVE ANY FINANCIAL INTEREST IN THIS PRODUCT!!!!

I am wondering if this is another consumer scam!

I think the premise is some sort of capacitive device to effect the power factor.

They "claim" it will save your 25% of your electric utility bill. I think this is based upon various motors like the heat pump, pool, spa, freezer, refrigerator, etc.
I truly doubt it will effect electronic stuff like TV sets and computers.

Anyone here heard of this thing?

The flow of vars, or reactive power, or 'imaginary' power, through a watt-hour meter will not effect the meter reading. It does however result in energy transmission losses to the utility company. The utility company installs meters on large facilities that measure the KVA or var demand and penalizes the company in the form of higher rates if they are typically less than 95% PF. There is some truth to the site but it does not apply to a home owner and it will not save you ANY money.
