$24-30/hour isn't a living in this day and age...it really isn't.
And in CA where it takes you 2 hours to get to work, sitting in traffic?
Skew dat! I'd rather sell rice pudding on ebay!

Not in Fresno, we are everything Los Angeles & San Francisco isn't. No high rent or traffic jams here. Plenty of room & good people. Non existent humidity, 60-80 degrees six months out of the year., one hour from Yosemite National Park, two hours from the beach, 45 minutes from the snow, 4 hours from the desert. Skiing, hiking, cycling, fishing, hunting, golf... oh boy do we have golf and cheap. We have our problems, but we are definitely the best kept secret in California. Plus, Fresno State just won the college baseball championship! BTW - it pays 24-35 per hour, not 24-30, and that's not the only position that pays 35, which may not go far in San Fran or LA, but goes a long way in this part of the country.

That would be good pay, up here in MN. Then the benefits which gets added in there, would make it an awesome pay. But I'll stick to my wood butchering day job, smells better too.... :D :D :D

No disrespect Dunbar, but what do you pay your employees in KY? Or if you have none, what would you?
Also, it's spodelee's business. He can pay $5/hr. or $500.00/hr. if he wants and it's kind of none of our business to criticize. And remember, this is his first emplyee towards his plumbing side. If things go well, he might look to increase their salary quickly.
All I'm saying is he's taking a pretty good risk and chance that's costing him more up front than any employee.
Give him a break.
J.C.
P.S. alot of shops in N.C. will MAX OUT your salary at $25.00/hr. last I checked.:eek::eek: And yes I know the differences in economies between Cali. & N.C. Good luck Spodelee! :)

For those who are not from California Fresno is a farming community which has grown up. The cost of living is no where near what the costs would be in a large city. The wages he is offering would be considered great pay for the area.

Acceptable to our insurance company - which means we pay less for our insurance in return for employees with good driving records; no DUI's, wreckless driving, multiple speeding tickets, etc... Our GPS system on the trucks helps keep costs down too.
After breathing smoke for several days because of California wildfires 300 miles north and south of me, I think I could go for a place that smells better too! Looking and smelling better today though.

I pay my master Plumber $50.00 an hour or 1/2 of what the job makes and we are in Kansas for god sakes. It`s the land of minimum wage @ 5.85 an hour.
If he was only a Journeyman I would only pay him 15 to 20.00 an hour.
He`s got to have a master plumber to be able to do plumbing and they aint cheap ;)

That is a good deal. I'd charge more than that. :) But a shop "owner" here will not pay an employee more than $25/hr. last I checked. Regardless of license and experience.
But that is an employee with all the expenses a company has to handle involving having that employee. Insurance, vehicle, insurance on that vehicle, taxes, etc.
Not just subcontracting a licensed individual.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR A JOURNEYMAN LEVEL PLUMBER WITH NO LESS THAN 5 YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL PLUMBING EXPERIENCE.
I don't think that would be a Master Plumber, and I would also tend to think its a good wage for a 5 yr in the trade. The bennies brings that up to a very decent wage. Maybe it isn't diddly squat in the top major cities, but a man can take care of his family with that. Plus, pay increase when they can prove what they are made of. Less headaches when not having to run a business too...

Ok it looks like Ive pissed some off with my comments, so here it goes.
If you are not a licensed plumber, you cant just "hire" a master and consider your company licensed. You are basically just "renting" a master plumber. It is illegal to do that here. If you are not licensed as the owner, how can you properly supervise or direct your "employees"?
It is like you are trying to "pull a fast one" over the licensing board.
I don't know how to state it clearer. I hope you guys get my point. It's almost like you undermine the licensing system.

I do believe this is legal in my state, in fact there is one company in this town that did this for 15-20 years. Until his sons got old enough and went for their license, then the company went off the oldest boy license. Perfectly legal.....
("how can you properly supervise or direct your "employees"?) The master Plumber does the supervising and directs the employees, owner usually does the scheduling and helps with the bids and so forth.....

I see what your saying
I am licensed under him ( I do have a Card with a city number on it in my back pocket at all times, one with his Co and one for my Co in another City) and I also work for him but he also works for me from time to time.
But yes some could and might look at it the way you explained it ;)
It`s all good here ;)
Oh and when he`s on site his Word is over mine so he is the one that is supervising and or directing our employees.
We had that problem with one of my guys asking who they had to listen too....lol
I told em if he says jump you better ask "How High!"
There is only one Chief on site and he is the master plumber!

If you own xyz sewers and are not licensed you cant do that job, even if you hire me, Joe Blow, with a masters license. You are trying to rent me. If you sub the job to abc plumbing (Joe Blows COMPANY) then yes I can do the job. So I guess the answer would be no I'm not working for you!

It is cool. That's what the code/law states here. Bottom line is if the master plumber does not own 51% of the company, and prove it, that company can not do plumbing (legally)
Yes we are all for rent as contractors, but doing what you do here, is considered a crime.

If you can read correctly you will see I never made a comment on California or Kansas licensing law . I guess some people see what they want to see. Where did I call Duckbutter a "D ickhead"? Go back and read it again. What I wrote was written in humor, and if he had a problem with it, Im sure he would have said something to me and not wait for you to stick up for him. As for the licensing/3 trade rule in Cali...I don't like it either and have made it known with you.
It's nothing personal, but even you agree that it's a foot in the door for inexperienced hacks to move in on work they have no business doing...all due respect for your age & time in the construction biz, I just don't think that rule is right.

Thank's Duck,no sweat. As to the 3 trade rule,You don't have to like it. It is My licenceing law ,under My ticket ,not Yours. I built nice little Cape cod homes for $30,000. No contr. License needed in Mass. 1971. That was wrong. I did a good job, some didn;t .Of course ,that was no buss. of anyone in Ca. By the way I passed My C-36 Ca. plumbers Lic. test some years ago.
