Ben,
At first I thought that plug was for a dryer, because the plug looks like a 30 or 40 amp dryer plug. Aside from having a universal receptacle on that (probably even more dangerous than the universal plug), it looks like that is pretty thin wiring (12 or 14 gauge), which wouldn't be suitable for a for a heavy duty dryer circuit.
Though the filename is disposer wiring, so it could just be the picked an odd plug for it.

tyman, those copper flexes are abou all we can use in earthquake country. the stainless braided ones fail in a few years. i've gone back to copper flexes 6 years ago. we also have to strap the heater at the upper and lower 1/3 with a rated approved seismic restraint.

the supply line to dishwasher was 5/8'' auto heater hose and the drain line was 2 different colors of garden hose
Are you sure it wasn't the other way 'round? The heater hose isn't rated for that much pressure but the garden hoses would handle it.

Yes but that was the whole problem. When the santee was roughed in it was to high to install a branch tailpiece in finish. That is why the condensate was hooked up to the trap arm instead of the tailpiece. I can understand doing this once but this project was full of them.

If I'm correct that is a Weil Mclain indirect. There is no drain on the bottom of the indirect tank. That is supposed to be the draw off that "drains" the water from the tank. Although it is in the wrong location as it should not be in the auxillary tapping it should go in the cold tapping.

Those relief valves should be lifted now and then. Ever see what happens when they never get used, then don't work when you need them to? I'm sure a fair percentage of the plumbers on this forum have at one time or
other. I don't so much have a problem with using a tee if the probe is long enough, except there doesn't appear to have been a reason for it?
It's not even an outlet, the piping is going of the srv outlet. Seems like the tee should have been put in the domestic piping at least.

No I haven't.What are you telling me,you pressure test on the other side of the t+p to see if it kicks off when a tank fails.
What I have seen is four valves that I or others have fiddled with for one reason or another start leaking to where it had to be replaced.

You're a smart one ;) One of the options in the piping diagram has it on the cold side but this heater comes with an extra full lenth dip tube for using the auxiliary tapping for a drain down.

No thats chemicals in our drinking water after they are evaporated.
Small leak on 90 just out of picture. She has been aware of this leak for 3 years but didn't bother to call about it.
If it makes everyone sleep better at night I will confirm thet the auxiliary tapping does indeed have a full lenth diptube and if so, I will move the relief valve and brass tee to the hot water outlet. My thinking is, the relief probe would not be as effective inside the dip tube...right?

No, but as a plumber, when you fiddle with a relief valve and it doesn't reseat, what's the big deal with replacing it? You just saved the homeowner a call down the road.
The 8" element means it reaches the tank, designed to be used with a tee on the hot water outlet. I still don't understand the purpose of the boiler drain, although I missed that it wasn't a valve too when I first looked at the pic.

This is an indirect fired water heater. 2 tanks. Domestic 60 gallon storage inside a stainless steel tank with maybe 10 gallon capacity?. Boiler water circulates through the outer tank to heat the inner domestic. Very effective design. The problem is there is no way to drain the inner domestic tank. So they give you an auxilliary tapping into the top of domestic with a long diptube to "siphon" water out if you need to drain it. Not likely you will ever need to. These things last forever.

I was not aware of this.I'll tell you right now I'm a little bit leery of tripping every T+P I come across throughout my travels during the day, friends, family, associates outside of work.I can see myself replacing quite a few if I chose to go around "making sure they work".
I'm going to try an experiment.
I'm going to start by buying five and putting them in my truck. And ask the owners of them if I can pop them.If they fail I'll replace.
What percentage do you guys figure are going to fail?
I'm curious and would like to know.
All in all I appreciate your desire to help others understand.

I worked for a shop that specialized in multi-residential maintanance & renovation.
One of the younger guys snapped at me for using the T&P for draining water mains as we were working because he'd had trouble at other locations.
I explained it to him, he still went to the boss and the boss told him I was right...if we came across any that weren't functioning it was additional work to boot.
You'll be surprised at how few have trouble, but when they do, you can explain to the customer that it's best you found it first rather than it discharge without anyone around to notice.

You're a smart one ;) One of the options in the piping diagram has it on the cold side but this heater comes with an extra full lenth dip tube for using the auxiliary tapping for a drain down.
I may be wrong but I think you have to install the extra dip tube, it's been a while since Ive used W/M
Dunbar didn't install the heater but he's free to 'splain it to you
Ultra Plus 60 comes with a Watts XL-100-8 T&P valve with 8" element.
The heater will not drain if its installed on the hot side as it will only drain whats above the heater

Actually what you are thinking is W.A.S.P. and that has nothing to do with with immigrants. As their aren't many Italian protestants.

From Wikipedia:
"Wop is an English pejorative ethnic slur for a person of Italian descent. It is derived from the Neapolitan word "guappo", meaning a person who flaunts an overbearingly cocky and swaggering attitude."
Keep in mind it is from Wikipedia so it may not be true!

I'm sure you recall the rivalry between "Eastie" and "Southie"..Irish vs Italian.
What sucked for me is I'm both, with a Scandinavian paternal namesake.
I grew up with my Italian gramma putting a heaping plate in front of me reciting "Mange, Mange...VITA!". I'd eat so much it hurt my stomache, pleading with her to let me stop along the way.
Then some sundays we'd go to my Irish "Nana's" for boiled dinner, which I preferred because it didn't hurt my stomache so much not being forced to eat ten lbs of pasta.
I used to joke that I was a "McWop".
