I don't know if this is the correct forum to ask, but I guess I'll give it a go.

I have a ventless gas fireplace insert that I'd like to install in my basement family room. It says that it needs to be enclosed in a "solid fuel burning fireplace, or a ventless firebox." My question is, do you think/know if I were to frame a box and use that tile backerboard, if that would work? Or, should I just have a brick guy come and have him build an enclosure?

Thanks in advanced for any of your responses.

My state is rediculously cautious about them.
They are very popular in many states further south, but in colder climates they are used much more than they would be down south.
I would strongly suggest talking to a licensed plumber or gas fitter about it.
You might need to install a liner, as well as a co detector.

They expressly NOT to be used as a primary source of heat.

The idea that they are generally less than 40Kbtu is compared to a stove...but a stove is only on for maybe an hour or two.

Mistakingly installing one of these without proper safety...O2 sensor built in, CO detector plumbing/gas and fire inspection is unwise.

If anything were to happen as a result of installing one without permits, it could very well be an issue with insurance.

Thanks for the info.

It is 30k btu and would not necessarily be used as primary heat, mostly supplimental when needed (we have central air/heating).

I'll check around with some contacts I might have.
