View Full Version : What's everyone working on?

Just wondering what everyone is working on?

I'm a graphic designer and a major do it your selfer who thinks he can make things out of wood too so I decided to build cabinets for my new kitchen addition. Never did any of this before so I decided to build some bookshelves for my kids rooms as a warm up. Over all, the first two units turned out OK. Did dados across 16 inches. The first unit was a nightmare cause my jig (or what every you call it) just did not work. Dados were out of alignment and I had a heck of a time assembling.

Spent 2 months developing a second and then a third jig that got my wide dados down to a science. I impressed myself (an easy thing to do).

Built both units out of oak plywood and used 3/4 oak to do the edges with a plate joiner. I thought this would be easy but am having a hard time getting things lined up the way I want (perfect).

Used oil wall primer to pickle (saw this on Norm's). Left it on about 5 minutes then rubbed in a pecan stain. This really turned out nice. Finished with 3 coats of thinned down (like water) poly. 320 grit between coats.

So, overall, I'm learning a lot from doing and from this forum. Can't wait to tackle the cabinets. After 6 foot tall bookshelves, 36 inch cabinets sound like a vacation.

Best regards,

Henry

Currently working on an outdoor bar and new BBQ cabinet for deck. Learning a lot about using tile in an outdoor application as both with have tiled tops.

Next will be lower deck addition to tie into middle deck addition completed last year. This will include a section to accommodate a hot tub as well. If time permits, would also like to work on a garden bench and rose arbor. I have also committed to installing a Koi pond with water fall and fountain.

That should keep me out of trouble.....but then again :D

Currently replacing transom on a 12' fishing boat. Using 3/4 birch plywood. Any ideas on sealing edges? Not worththe cost of getting too expensive.

Just finished the grandfather clock - put it in the foyer this morning. A couple of things I would have done differently, now I know why Norm builds a prototype first, but overall looks great.

Next I go outside to re-do the deck. A lot of work, although nothing fancy. I am kind of looking forward to getting all that 15 year old cedar into inventory. I already made three adirondak chairs (Norm's plans), maybe a play-house for the kids that I can turn into a shed as they get older.

I fill in between projects with wood bowl or other turnings on the lathe. These are relatively quick projects that make nice gifts and accent pieces.

All-maple sewing table for the Commander-in-chief with machine lifter. Started with the drawers first (5 of them), which I just finished last night. The rest of the line up: custom workshop bench fitted for assembly and repair work on my radio-controlled airplanes and model helis; working table for the cut-off saw; rolling caddy for all my clamps like Norm's; small work table for electrical/electronic projects in the den; all-metal potting table... like a hermit happily confined to the woodshop! :D :D

Building a tool box that was in shopnotes #62. Going to give it to my brother inlaw. Building book shelves and entertainment center for our family room. Just starting to get into the spring thing outside. Now the wife wants a new picnic table :D (I want a new saw :D :D ).

Tplank you should be able to get marine poly at your local HD, or any other home improvement for that matter. I just like HD for Ridgid anyhow. Find that more often than not, when they ask me if they can help, they can't do as well, or better than I can.
If anyone else has that problem, do what I did, memorize the whole store. smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

Well I am in the middle/just started/nearly finished my usual running 5 or 6 projects, starting from a simple small bookcase up to a 12 foot cartopper boat.

It's amazing how many friends and relatives need this or that building when they find out that we are into woodworking and that you have actually built a chair you can really sit on... I guess you all know what I mean.

Cheers Ivor

About to finish a rocking horse for my granddaughter's 3rd b-day next month. Next in line is a potty chair for a friends niece and a couple more horses. I can't understand it...no charge means more demand.

I'm working on a bathroom vanity for a friend’s house. This is the very first project I have ever attempted and I think it is winning.

Think it might have turned out straighter if I had a TS2424.

I am working on building a traditional style workbench out of hickory. If I could find more time it would really help. Anyone know where I can get a 30 hour day?

Woody, I have found that my dual personality (my friends call me skitzofrenik, but we don't know what that means) allows me to get twice as much done.

Right now I'm trapped in the laundry room trying to finish it for LOML.

After that (hopefully soon!!!), I plan on making a jelly cupboard with some barn wood I salvaged. Can't wait.

I've got a dozen desk clocks at the half way stage and Norm's Cherry Shaker Cradle in the works. It's my first time working with cherry, and this sure is beautiful wood.
The clocks all vary...walnut, maple, poplar, purpleheart and padauk.

But right at this very second I'm working on a Molson Canadian ;)

Just finishing (literally) a tack trunk for the commander-in-chief to use at the barn. She's been using a plastic storage tub for a few years and after letting me spend our money on tools instead of a trunk I figured she was due ;) Pretty simple box construction using biscuits with an applied molding and dovetailed trays. For the next project I'll have to consult the 5000 item list of things waiting to be done! :D

Wish I could say I was working on some great projects but still trying to put the shop together....I have 5 ridgid tools still in the boxes in the garage waiting for the grand opening day...one more wall to take out, 2 - 3 weeks of painting then maybe I can actually start setting up tools...in the meantime I sit back and read all your posts with my first cup of coffee...I have learned so much from you folks in the last 6 weeks or so...thanks a million for your ideas and suggestions.

All,

These are great!!! We're certainly keeping our respective lumber yards (and electric plants) profitable.
Because of our mild winter up here in Massachusetts, I've been able to already complete my deck rebuild project. I used the old frame and replaced decking and railings. I used Trex brand composite decking. Great stuff.
I need an indoor shop project for my evenings and rainy days. I'd like to build the "perfect workbench". Any thoughts, links to plans, inputs, would be greatly appreciated.

Wayno,

Here are a few links that might help. Everyone's idea of perfect is a little different but most of these plans can be tweaked to your personal needs. Finding the right hardware (usually the vise) can be a little trouble. They are available from a number of sources on the net and in better woodworking stores if you have one in your area.
Free Plan: http://www.delta-portercable.com/table/project/feb97/workbench/workbench.html

link to workbench book (a friend has this, very informative) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1561582700/002-2280768-0085650

workbenches for sale (good for ideas) http://www.makewoodwork.com/sitemap.htm

workbench "kit" http://www.woodsmithstore.com/eurworplanan.html

These are just a few. There are many out there.

Good luck,

Dog,

Thanks for the links to those workbenches. I think one for the basement workshop and one for the garage should do it....We never learn!!

MarkR,

Great news!!! Congratulations!!!!!

And how appropriate that you posted this in the "What you've been working on" thread. :D

Wayno,

You can never have too many workbenches. I was recently trying to convince my better half she needed one of those European vises mounted on her kitchen island.......

Why do they look at us like that??????? smile.gif

Thanks All. This is by far the best "project" I have ever made. What an AWESOME experience. It was a bit stressfull for the first 2 days, Brian got in a bit of distress during labor which caused him to breath and swallow some stuff he was not suppose too! Ended up in an emergency C-Section. Two days later, Mommy and Baby are doing great. He slept in our room for the first time last night. I'm sure it will get old, but for some reason I didn't mind getting woken up every 3 hours.

NEW PROJECT:

Thanks to the @#!%*&@!## that broke in, ripped off, and trashed my RV I now have another project. A number of drawers were pulled out, thrown down, and broken. Insurance covers most but after looking at the construction of the drawers, I think I can do better than the stock replacement. The faces are all solid oak and fortunately not damaged. The rest of the drawer is pretty well messed up.

As soon as I finish these WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE posters, I'm going to start on the repairs. Oh well, this may be a good time to invest in that Leigh dovetail jig I've been trying to convince myself I needed. (AKA looking for that silver lining.) I know there are some real experts on this forum in that area and could sure use some advice.

I don't even know where to begin with the damage on the hardwood floors in the galley. Maybe it's not as bad as it looked(hope).

I'm so mad right now I could spit nails. Anybody need a Mad Dog air nailer?

:( Wood Dog :( (aka Mad Dog......'till I get over it)
