When you say "shower valve stem", does that mean there is only a single handle to operate your shower?

The middle handle on the faucet is the diverter for the water to flow from the tub spout to the shower head .
It really depends on the type of faucet that you have as far as how to remove it. If it is a central brass or a gerber most of the time they screw ito the valve the same as the hot and cold stems do. But I really cant give you a proper answer without seeing the problem.
If you really cant figure it out I would say that you should call a licensed plumber in your area that you can trust to do the job properly for you.
