I am going to repair a hot water valve in a shower for a friend. She attempted to correct a problem of leaking water from the valve herself, and inadvertently broke the stem that turns the valve on and off. It is the cold water valve, and she already has the water supply turned off. What is the first step in this process, and also any dangers/pitfalls I should know about before I begin?

Is she hot? What's her mom look like?
Gotta' be careful or you wake up 10 years later praying for a Tsunami to bring sweet relief. That's what to worry about.
