My water heater is making noises like water boiling or bubbling. Other than the noises the water heater works perfect. What could be the possible cause?

Thanks,
Jim

Some questions-

1. Well or city water?

2. How hot is your water coming out of the heater?

3. Gas or electic heater?

jim, typically on a gas heater, sediment has built up on the bottom of the tank.

it's usually too late to flush it out as a homeowner.

how old is it and do you flush it out on a yearly basis?

the boiling is water droplets getting superheated between the hot steel tank and sediment. when you open a faucet and the pressure drops, you will get a louder rumbling noise as water boils at 212 with no pressure and higher at higher pressures.
