I'm looking for cheaper rough cut lumber for projects, and a higher quality/variety of cabinet grade plywood than offered by Lowes/HD. We live in southern Maryland (stationed at Andrews AFB) Calvert county. I have asked the local hardware stores and some neighbors and say they have heard of a saw mill in the local area but are always unsure of it's location. We have ventured to "Exotic Lumber" by Annapolis with good success and a great variety but the price for domestic seems higher than what a local sawmill may offer. I have also heard that there may be a place in Alexandria V.A.? Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks

Smoot Lumber in Alexandria has quality wood but comes at a steep price.

Try Gallegher & Hughley in northwest D.C.

Smoot's is nice...but it's way pricey! They want to sell high-end trim and moldings. But if you're looking for exotic woods, Smoot's will have it.

I did a quick search, and some of these might have what you're looking for:

B & G Lumber CO
55 Lumber Mill Lane, Elkton, MD 21921

Beckman Lumber CO
421 Maple Avenue, Oakland, MD 21550

Blickenstaff Logging
12811 Brandenburg Hollow Road, Myersville, MD 21773

Blue Ribbon Lumber LLC
275 Blue Ribbon Road, Oakland, MD 2155

BY Lumber Company
4770 Crain Highway, White Plains, MD 20695

Charlotte Hall Lumber CO Inc
Charlotte Hall, MD 20622

Chestertown Lumber CO
805 Washington Avenue, Chestertown, MD 21620

Clements Sawmill
951 Ridge Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771

E S Adkins & CO
801 N Salisbury Boulevard # 110, Salisbury, MD 21801

There's a lot to check out there. Wish I could point you to one or the other. There's also an Amish settlement across the river (way down Rt. 4 and across the bridge) that has it's own saw mill. As soon as I can get some more definite information about where they are, I'll let you know. Another good way to find people and places is to go to craft shows and ask the woodworkers there where they get their lumber.

Good luck with your projects!! :)

Just a little FYI in case it helps anyone.

Elkton, MD is almost at the DE/MD line off US40 not far from I-95.

Oakland is way out west in Garrett county near the Ohio boarder. A beautiful area but a loooooong tuff drive from Southern, MD out there.

Myersville and Mount Airy aren't far from Frederick, MD

Charlotte Hall and White Plains are in Southern, MD

Chestertown is the other side (DE side) of the bay and then a good run north. It's home to the oldest still standing court house in Maryland !!!

Salisbury isn't far (on the way actually) from Ocean City, MD

Question: Do you need a nice birch faced plywood or just a better grade than say D-C or D-B like what Home Depot & Lowes junk is? Most good lumber yards should have some where one side is grade A and the other B or C.
