I am new to cleaning drains. I am apartment maintenance guy and like to let the pros do the hard stuff and try to do the easy things than call them out to claer a drain. My problem is I don't know what I am doing so I try and then end up call out the pros and they do it in 15 minutes. I have a k-400 and want to know the dope on clearing the tub drain.

Always run the snake through the overflow first. Also remove hair and soap deposits from cross in drain spud.

a linked stopper for the drain system? Then going through the overflow is easier. Use a 1/4 bulb tip cable
If you have a overflow that has a center mounting cap (no linked stopper), then it makes it more difficult. Usually, a 1/4 cable with bulb end will fit with a little finesse, but sometimes you must cut the bulb off and go straight cable. With this you run the risk of drilling through old CI and plastic. Make sure you have access to the trap. The trap is usually accessible behind an access panel...sometimes not.
But HEY, that's why we get paid the big bucks ;)

On second thought. I'm not helping someone take the food off of a drain cleaners families table.
Pour some drain chemical in it. ;)

last thing you want down a 1.5'' waste and overflow is a 3/8'' drum cable.
get the k-39 af with the stock 5/16'' cable and you'll be fine.
of course the overflow assy is where you run from.

On third thought, if your going to try chemicals, I would only use enzymes.
No harsh acids.
Or plunger with wet rag in the overflow.
Anything else, please let your friendly neighborhood drain cleaner make a living. Thank You.
