Can someone explain if it's possible to compress a picture file to be able to post in the forum?

Currently if you have a pic that's 500KB it's too large to be posted normally.

Thanks.

i purposely shoot everything in low resolution and it comes out fine for the stuff you guys see here;)

this allows me to easily download and it gives me 5x the amount of photos on the xd card.

unless you plan on printing a poster or seeing the pimples on dunbars as:D, low resolution is fine.

sorry dunbar, next time i'll pick on crack;)

If you use a cannon camera and use their software, go to internet options and just follow the steps from there. Very easy.

If you are using Windows XP, get the Image Resizer Powertoy.

If you are using Vista, then get the non-Microsoft version of Image Resizer for Vista which works exactly the same and looks 100% like the XP version. Why MS has failed even after 2 years to put out Vista versions of the Powertoys is beyond comprehension, they are a great Bunch of apps.

XP Powertoys

Vista Image Resizer Powertoy Clone

PS: Some (but not many) of the Microsoft XP powertoys will work under Vista. Try at your own risk.

You can resize the picture's width and height, or you can decrease the quality if it's a jpg. Some software saves by default at 100% quality which is really not necessary for the web. Usually around 80% quality is good enough and allows to save a few K of data storage.

I know how to add pictures as attachments, but how do you make the picture appear in the post like a youtube video?

I'll take a stab at helping you...

On the message reply box there is an "insert picture" button in addition to an "insert link" button.

The "insert picture" button is yellow and looks like a picture of a mountain and a moon (or sun)... If you want to insert an image in your post you first have to make sure that pic has been uploaded somewhere or already lives on the web... This could be a pic you've uploaded to your Ridgid photo album located in your User CP (control panel)
Find the pic you want then right click it and choose "copy image location"...
Next click the "insert picture" button on the tool bar of the Reply to Thread or Post New Thread message box and paste the contents of your clipboard into the box that pops up...

The image will appear where ever your cursor is located in the message box
(it's good to hit return and drop down a line before inserting an image)

You probably know this but for the sake of others...
The "insert link" button works similarly...
Copy the URL you want and paste it into the "insert link" box that appears when you click that button (blue globe with a chain link)...
The URL will now appear as a clickable link in your message...

Another variation with this button is to highlight a word or some text in your message and then click the "insert link" button and paste an URL in the box... This will turn that particular word or text into a hyperlink that goes to whatever URL you pasted in the box...

One last tip... You can highlight a picture you've inserted (with the "insert picture" button) and then click the "insert link" button, paste an URL in the box and make the picture a clickable hyperlink if desired...

PS. For Youtube videos just grab the url (not the embed code) and paste it into the "insert link" box that pops up when you click that button... when you post the message the link will display as that particular Youtube vid...
