I use the 18v battery on mine, it is great for non-finish type projects (deck joists, bottoms/tops of doors, ect.). It is super convienient when you don't have to fumble with a cord! And actually surprisingly powerful. I got mine on ebay for $70, no charger or battery but with the case.

I have the 18v Ridgid R848 planer and the cordless planer just does not get enough pub because you don't use it that much or for a long duration of time. But, when you do, it's just the right tool for the job - quick, efficient, and done. Love the thing and it's one of the tools that I leave the older NiCads stuck into as weight is not a factor on flat surfaces - no need for a lithium in the planer as the NiCad has plenty of runtime for the planer use.
