Hi,
I was offered today two large pieces of Oak for lumber. One piece is 3 ft x 16 ft and the other is 2 ft x 8 ft.
I am wondering if anyone can give me an idea of what it might cost to have someone with a portable saw mill come and cut this up for me. The tree is about 50 miles from my home so I could more easily move it after it was sawn.
How is work of this type priced, by the hour or the number of board feet? If there were to be blade damage from unforseen metal such as old nails buried in the trunk is the client (me) expected to pay for this or is it built into the cost of milling?
Is there a rule of thumb to estimate the number of Bd. Ft. yield from a tree?
Wondering if the work is worth the time and trouble. I of course wouldn't be able to use the wood for some time. I have some projects that I would like to start but don't want to put them off for months waiting for the wood to dry. I'd also have to store it some place. I could make space in one garage bay to sticker and stack it, but there would be no climate control of temperature or humidity, just a dry space.

WX finally cleared and we were able to cut today. I found a sawyer not far from home (10 miles) with a WoodMizer. Total price (< $300) was good and would had been better if we had not hit two nails :(
Now I just have to wait a year for it to dry...bummer. But I will have some great 5/4, 4/4, and 6/4 lumber. I have about 600 bf all told.
It will take me at least two and maybe three trips in my P/U to haul it home (50 miles) from my friends place. I had it loaded to the limit today, the front end was getting a little loose so I took off about 200 Lbs, didn't want to be cruising down the interstate with no steering :eek:
