Here is a good explanation (http://benchmark.20m.com/articles/CrosscutSleds/CrosscutSledArticle.pdf) of several designs.
You will need Adobe Reader to view this.

It's a jig that you use to run in both miter slots of your tablesaw. Basically - you have a flat panel ( typically baltic birch plywood ) that is set at 90 degrees to your blade - and a support at the opposite end of your sled for rigidity. It's an easy way to crosscut wood on your saw that is safe - rather than trying to use your tablesaw's fence ( crosscutting long and narrow boards is dangerous - good chance of kickback & twisting during the cut )
You can add a track and measuring device for repeat cuts - or use more simple approaches like clamping a piece of wood to the front of your sled as a repeat stop block.

Not to get too technical, but I have built most of my sleds with just one strip of maple or oak.
It was the way I was taught and it works, so I haven't fixed it.

Here's a picture of my Crosscut Sled. Nothing fancy, but it's accurate.
