Sanders: Random orbit vs 1/4 sheet palm

Hey all--

Question: When would one use a random orbit sander vs a 1/4 sheet palm sander? Are they for differing applications? Which would be used for finish work? Which for aggressive surface removal?

I'd appreciate any clarification!

Yep... I posted in both forums as I wasn't sure where the question most applied. Thank you for your words of wisdom (in the other forum) Dave. I just got back from HD with a new ROS.

Cool, which one did you get?

I got the Ridgid that was well-reviewed by one of the magazines a while back, the R2600 5" ROS. Looking forward to using it this weekend.
