A: Home depot we don't have a manards here in knoxville (yet) and the people at lowes seem to be bothered if you ask them a question or for assistance. We also don't have the sears tool store like they do in Indiana and Illnois ( father-in-law works there) in Indiana. So HD wins

Up here in Traverse City we only have Home Depot and Sears. Home Depot is definately first and Sears second.
It depends: for a speciric "toy," the favorite place would depend on what the toy was, but assuming you mean in general, HD by a wide margin, despite the fact that you have to wear gloves and change your clothes when you get home (apparently when they built the HD in Waltham, Massachusetts, they forgot to seal the concrete floor). However, there are some hand tools for which Sears is still a good place, but not too much to "browse."
You didn't have Four Seasons Guns (Woburn, Massachusetts) as a choice.
danomal,
We'll probably end up using this as one of the front page surveys eventually.
RGad,
Are you into shooting? Last year I would have had to put Shooting and Reloading down as my favorite hobby. Havent been out a lot this year. Expensive sport :D
Later, Josh
All sports are expensive; shooting no more so than others (and a good deal less so than some).
For many years I was very active as a competitive shooter, including National Match and what used to be called PPC (Revolvers). A match consisted of at least 150 rounds of reloaded .38 wadcutters (2.7 gr. Bullseye), and a practice was often as many as 500. So, in the great tradition of Tom Sawyer and the white-washed fence, one year I got my wife interested in helping me reload. (There is something mesmerizing about running a couple thousand rounds of brass through the sizer.) Lately my trips to the range have been limited to re-quals and giving some instruction.
About 10 years ago we had a work party where we built a couple of hundred frames for the outdoor pistol range. Boy, do I wish I'd had my miter saw for that job!

I did buy my Makita 14" gas powered concrete saw at Home Depot, and got them to go 10% below an internet price that I printed and brought in.
I bought my Porter-Cable Sawzall at Lowe's($81.00),my Milwaukee large demo hammer at an online refurbishment center, and both of my new Bosch tools(hammer drill and demo hammer) on e-bay.

It kind of hard to belive that I'm still getting replys to this post over 4 year after it was first put on this sight. I dont shop Lowes or Home Depot for major power tools any more. In fact most all my power and hand tools come for WoodCraft.

One of the main reasons I like dealing with WoodCraft is that they have a 1 year return policy. Both at their Web site and stores. I got a lathe a while back along with the turning tool. I've found out I dont like turning so I'll be taking it back. They even refund the shipping cost and the cost you pay to return the item. tongue.gif

Woodcraft is a top notch company. I use to buy a lot from them and had nothing but good experiences. I even stopped at Parkersburg and was treated very well.

Home Depot AND Lowes for me!

Tool Crib which has been changed to Acme tools, then Home Depot, then Northern Tool, then Lee Valley, then Grizzly Industrial, then Sears, then, then I could keep going. Victoria Secrets would be a great place if they had tools, probably wouldn't get me and the wife out of there...LOL...

garager you are a genius. If they had a tool section in Forever 21, or a womens' shoe section in HD my girl and I would probably be married already! I'm only half joking...it probably would work, even if it was a store in a store like the Starbucks inside Borders.

and thats not even during their 50% of special coupon! Hee Hee! :p..
Actually .. if you have a need for a one time use cheap tool that you
will never use again ...HarborTools can fill that bill.
Mechanics hand tools Craftman.
Lowes or Home Depot for hardware and power tools
Whichever has the best value for the best price.
I do like Ridgid power tools though.
This is funny, reminds me of my son's persistent questions when he was little guy, "What's your favorite color?" "What's your favorite thing to eat?"
And my answer to "What's your favorite toy store" is the same as the answer to all his questions: I don't have a favorite. Must be a personality flaw...
When I want (er, ah, I mean need) something, I shop around to see who has what for how much and decide what to get. That includes internet shopping. [Local stores should take note on internet shopping - there's one local store I can say I consistently get decent customer service: Ace Hardware. When I go in there I always have at least one person ask me if I need help, and they know what they're talking about. Everywhere else is hit'n'miss, some days are good, some days aren't. I've been to two local specialty woodworking shops and both lacked decent CS. They both have knowledgeable folks, but they have been rude, pushy, and sometimes act like they don't have time to talk to me. I have yet to visit the Woodcraft store here...but this is probably a subject for another thread.]
Davet - I don't think all the Harbor Freight stuff is throw away. I bought a belt sander (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=90045) there for $27 and so far it has been a workhorse. (There's a local store here, so no shipping costs for me.)

My favorite toystore is Dawson's in Los Angeles. A bookstore (the oldest in Los Angeles) that specializes in western, California, and Los Angeles literature. I'm a book collector.
But my favorite tool store would be none of the above. It would be Colonial Supply (available by catalog or the internet) of McMaster-Car (which is more expensive) but catalog items are of quality and available.

I agree with Newman,
However, Its hard for me to choose between Lowe's and the HD.
The HD is closer but customer service is real crappy. The only guy in the entire store that knows anything and is willing to ever help anyone is handicapped with a walking stick and hard to understand, I think he probalby had a stroke or something.
Lowes has aabout the same level of service, but has a much better selection of hand tools and power tool accessories.
I guess its a toss up with me. It depends on what I am looking for.

Up here in Canada, we don't have the choice of Lowes (yet) or Amazon. Otherwise I'd be shopping at both. The only reason I visit HD is because of their strong sale promotions and the fact that they're the only ones that carry Ridgid tools.

None, but if I were to choose one form the list it would be Lowes. Home depot's selection seems to get worse all the time and the people at Lowes are always more friendly and more knowledgeable.
Also, the stores look a lot nicer.
These days I only go to HD as a last resort. Lowes gets my business.
My favorite store is any online shop that has the rock bottom cheapest price with cheap shipping!
