went to rockler today, and picked up one of their heaivier duty blue composite inserts for my ridgid 3612. i am a bit confused. it fits in no problem, my question is security. does this thing need to be secured to the table? do i need to drill and countersink the screwhole?

I doubt that it's absolutely necessary to secure the insert to the tabletop but it certainly wouldn't hurt to do so. As long as it fits snugly, is level with the tabletop and the back doesn't rise up when you pass your workpiece over it, you should be OK.
I'm curious, which one did you get, the one for Craftsman saws? Did you have to do any tweaking to get it to fit.
