what causes a jig saw to not cut straight and how do you correct it other than getting a new operator.

What brand of jig saw are you using and are cutting wood or metal?

Check that the blade is square and make sure you are using a quality blade. Cheaper blades will flex and follow the grain more than thicker blade.
