Ridgit SP-500 starts often

I have a ridgid SP 500 sump pump that seems to start
often like every hour or so even though there is no
rain.

The pump was purchased 6 months ago from Home Depot.
It seems that it was doing this from beginning. We
thought that this is normal, but I suspect
something is wrong with the pump.


Any suggestions?

Tushar,
Did you install a check valve when you installed the pump? If you've got a long run from the pump to where the water exits and don't have one, it's possible that the water is just flowing back to the pump after it shuts off. You can get a check valve at almost any hardware store for a pretty cheap price. It installs easily, and will keep the pump in service longer since it won't have to run as often.
