Newbee Question - Router use

Please give this lowly newbee your router advice sensei...

What is the best procedure for cutting pockets in sheet goods? :confused:
i.e. a router table plate pocket, pocket for replaceable inserts in a drill press table, etc.

Make a template using bushing tape to table or what ever plunge out the middle remove bushing and plunge to depth of insert.

Shame not paying attention to Norm especially after he just did it in last 2 shows Router 101

Best stuff is MDF for template .
