Dimmer Outlet Switch???

Ok guys... just finishing up the accent lighting in my kitchen. it looks awesome and it looks very professional :rolleyes: . Now for the final touch I want to put it on a dimmer switch. The lights said they could be run through a 120v dimmer safely.

Currenly I have them plugged into an outlet at full strength. I want to know is there a outlet / dimmer swtich combo I can drop into a gang box. So i could plug the lights into the top/bottom and have the switch control the current to the outlet half of the combo.

Basically like a standard outlet (2 outlets) but in this one one of the outlets would be a dimmer switch and would control the current going to the other outlet. This would be awesome if its out there... Dimming the accent lighting would put the final touch on the lighting.

Thanks a lot guys... maybe some day I will be able to contribute to the elctrical forum but everybody else is still light years ahead of me.

I've never heard of one. I think that it is a bad idea, to have a receptacle on a dimmer. Even though you know that the receptacle is on the dimmer somebody else might not and plug something else into it ie.(TV, small microwave):eek: Nothing runs very good on a dimmer, except for lights.

hmmm I am really trying to avoid the stupid lamp dimmer with the 3 foot cord as an option. I want to get the lighting dimmed somehow but I cant run lamp wire behind the walls to wire into a traditional switch.

Any ideas guys?

they are limited to 300W but you can control multiple modules with the same switch

That's what I was thinking of Wayne, an X10 module. They make receptacles also but as has been pointed out in an application such as this where someone may plug in something other than a light it might now be a good choice. The plug-in X10 modules though are easily reversible. Be sure you get a lamp module and not a appliance module, the latter do not have the dimming function and are only on/off control.

do they carry x10s at HomeDepot? I may look into that. Not as clean as what I was originally thinking but will get the job done.

Nope, it is a manufacturer direct product. I have used their cameras and transmitters, cool stuff. Never had a problem with the company or produce quality. http://www.x10.com/home.html
