View Full Version : Post your Shop pics
Alright.. I know some of you have some great shops out there... some with a lot of orange in them. So I am gonna give you a chance to show off your shops. Post your woodworking shop pics on this thread and ProBrand and I will select the 3 best looking shops at the end of October. The winners will each receive a RIDGID shirt and a RIDGID hat. We will post the winners at the end of this thread and contact the winners.
So lets see your shops. They don’t have to be all RIDGID but the more orange (or red/grey) the better.
Lets see em,
Josh

Inserting tongue in cheek, .......I think that those with grey RIDGID tools should receive extra points. ;) After all, they've been loyal to RIDGID longer than the orange guys.:p Double extra points if you own tools of all three of the RIDGID tool colors .
Will post some as soon as I hide all the yellow tools.

All the tools are either in my buddy's shop being stored  or in the basement being used to build my new office so I can surrender my current one to being a future nursery. I now have 900 sq feet to play with though and drawing plans are under way for the new shop. Don't know that I will have my new shop set up in time for your contest, especially with hunting season coming up......:D

Wayne I bet that shop is a breeze to cleanup. (pun intended)
Ok got the pictures to finally load from the camera. It is just a cheap one but here is my shop. I built all the cabinets you see out of reclaimed lumber.

TOD, nice shop. I am suprised at how clean it is. We spent 2 hrs cleaning my dads shop the other day and there is still dust on everything Maybe Ill take some pics of his shop when I am over there again. He only has our 3 piece combo though. Everything else is 30 yrd old craftsman stuff and a Dewalt Router (we hadnt released ours yet )
wbrooks, I guess your collection counts a shop. Nice collection of our tools there.

Thanks Josh, it will be nice when its done next year after tax rebate (I hope). I have always converted the garage into a shop but now that we are in the snow belt and have some property, cars go in the garage (along with my tools this winter:eek: .
New shop will be 24 X 36 with 10' ceiling, the concrete you see in the background is the foundation for the new shop.
The bigger tools are Emerson made Craftsman
Ah... I was wondering if you were just setting them on a job site or displaying them in your back yard or something. Looks like a few of you are in the process of creating your shops. 24x36 aint bad at all.

Ok - Within the pics you find a great deal of orange. Even the cyclone!!
I very much appreciate the ridgid brand as good quality at a good price. You'll find a 12" CMS, TS3650, Drill Press, OSS and a rechargeable Ridgid drill im my shop. Next purchase is the 6 1/8" jointer and then the band saw. Waiting for a good deal on both. Will need to move a wall in the shop to get both of those in there. :D Here are the pics.

Deer Creek, you pretty satisfied with the Delta Jointer Jr?
DeerCreek
09-27-2006, 10:07 PM
Roadrunner - The quick answer is no. It's a good solid machine for sure, but the it's difficult to work longer boards. It can be done, but it's not easy. It works great for 4' boards and shorter.
The nice side, is that it takes very little space to store. My previous shop was even smaller than this one and I couldn't make the space for a larger jointer. I will be stepping into a 6 1/8" jointer in the next 6-12 months.
So, it has it's good points, being solid, good a making things flat (as long as the boards are short) and taking up little space. If one has the space, this is not the way to go.

Mine is a case where size definitely matters. I have a one Honda garage, that is anything larger than a Honda wouldn't fit even without all the other stuff in there. Right now I share it with the laundry, storage and my sons outside toy box, bikes etc., oh, yeah, the prefab firplace from the living room juts out in the middle. Everything in my shop is either on wheels or light enough to be lifted on a shelf. I might be getting the Delta model you have just for space concerns. I was wondering about the mechanical prowness of the unit.
Thanks for the opinion. Oh, I'm in Wilmington NC. If you're near and you would like to sell the Delta to upgrade, let me know. Thanks.
Now, the cyclone wouldn't happen to be a Pentz special would it?
DeerCreek, nice shop. How long did it take you to build your dust removal system. Do you still have to wear a mask other than sanding? I wish my dads shop had something like this.
BTW.. I am going to edit some of your posts just to switch the images so they display without having to click on links. I promise I wont change any of your wording.

DeerCreek,
When I go to bed at night, I have visions that look eerily like your shop. I basically have a workbench in the basement and one in the garage, and a portable Stanley 3x3 for outside. I would love that dust collection system, but the only "stationary" power tool I really have is a miter saw (and with the MSUV how stationary is it really?:)) Maybe the solution is to create a "need" for a DC by purchasing more tools??

Ummmm... here's the only photo I have right now.
http://www.morrisgarage.com/misc/MorrisGarage.jpg
All the tools are packed up against the wall to the left out of sight. All are Delta gray. ;) Use your imagination: There's a 10" contractor saw, a 24" scroll saw, a 15" drill press, a 14" wood/metal band saw, and a big homemade router table. In the cabinets above are assorted fixtures, and under the work bench are a bunch of P-C power tools. Oh, and a Ridgid (Skil) 14v drill. Guess that isn't gonna do, is it?
Ah well, I have a bunch of Ridgid hats, anyway. :) (I didn't see any disclaimer! ;) )

Ha! Ummm...no. Actually, it already is pretty close to the *real* RIDGID red, as in the colors of our pipeworking tools, logo, etc. Just not the orange as seen at Home Depot.
Besides, I'm not the type to post photos of my Ridgid tool on teh Interweb. ;)

Roadrunner - The Delta Jr would be a good addition for a small shop. I've done everything I needed with it. Just the bigger machines provide more convenience. Wish I were closer, I'm in Kanasas.
The cyclone has a pentz design blower, but the cyclone I cheaped out and bought the e-bay version. Understanding that it doesn't have the highest level of dust separation. I does however do a really good job. The blower is a 3HP with 14" impeller so it "SUCKS" and I have some fine dust flowing through to the filters, but not much. Thanks for looking.

Josh - thanks for the picture updates. The shop is pretty messy and the TS3650 needs a good polish. The cyclone took me about 2 months to build, working off and on. I just finished the cyclone when I took these pics. Didn't clean up well.
I first built the blower housing from a design on Bill Pentz web site. I bought the cyclone on e-bay, worked up the duct work and filters and such. I just wasn't into working with metal and the cyclone seemed a little to tough for my desire at the time. I modified the e-bay clone by adding a neutral vane and changing the outlet tube length, all per Bill Pentz. Still, the unit is not expected to have the same level of fine dust separation. It seprates all chips and nearly all of the fine dust. Some makes it through to the filters, but it gets caught there and does not make it to my lungs! I just need to clean the filters more often (not often though).
Going from a HF 2HP that was hooked to 4" ductwork, this is an awesome woodworking experience.
The blower has a 3HP motor and 14" impeller, so a huge amount of suction is being created. The unit was really loud, so I created an extra large muffler (you see it behind the filters), also orange, and this makes it sound about like the HF unit.
I do not wear a mask (don't know if I should or have to?). The suction at the machines is increadible and the dust is very limited. I also have the Oneida mini cyclone hooked up to a vacuum for sanding. This works great. For now, I'll pass on the mask. Maybe sometime down the road, but it really degrades my enjoyment of the hobby to wear a mask.
Thanks for looking! Regards, DeerCreek

My humble shop in suburban Virginia. Plenty of rough-cut lumber, sheet goods, and The Orange! My wife just bought a Jetta TDI (50 mpg!) and has been bugging me to build a new shop in the back yard. I'm thinkin' 30ft X 40ft....at least! Darn the bad luck.....

mitre saw is my least favorite tool for DC. It's a tough one to get just right.
Best of luck. DeerCreek

That doesn't feel too dark to work in? I'm almost done with my shop reorg, and I painted my walls and ceiling white (from the drywall gray previously) and it's so much nicer on the eyes.
I'll have to snap some photos of my shop when I get home. Lot's of Ridgid gray and orange in my shop! I think I'm up to about 18-19 Ridgid tools over the years.

Josh I am wondering why the spreader bar on the 3650 is so close to the table? Did you have trouble with the assembly instructions like so many others? I would also like to add if I am elected.....opps wrong thread.

Interesting...... I can only assume that is some Ridgid marketing deal or such as I seem to recall that you use your fathers shop and since you mentioned he doesn't have dust collection......
What's this, no Herc-u-lift systems on the planer or sander stands??!! Nice stand for the sander though. Hadn't seen one of those before, although I prefer to have mine in my bench. I also am unable to detect any outlets in the room? Is that a new line of battery operated tools? :p :D :p

Dear Josh:
I saw the pictures on Ridgid-Forum I can asure you this is not your father's shop. HA!
The dust collecter was outside, he has free standing lightsand we are in the process of installing more electric outlets. People wanted to know why he didn't have the her-u-lift systems on my planner, jointer, and sander, he said he would be gload to put them on if you send them to him. HA!HA! He didn't know that Ridgid made a dust collecter when he bought his or he would have it. His is an ugly green. I hope this answers all the questions they asked.

Me too, I am trying to convince the wife that we need new kitchen cabinets so I can have the old ones (which are perfectly fine and have many good years left in them) for the shop :)
my dad is a teacher and they were throwing out all the cabinets in their labs so he decided to salvage em. They are heavy as all get out but they are great working surfaces.

All the photos are making me green with envy. I can't have lots of machines because the house came with a small, one-car garage and that was it. At least I had the sense to say, right away, that the garage was for the shop and for NOTHING ELSE. No storage. Here's an unvarnished view of my little world.

Hi,
Thanks for the welcome. The DC is great - it's a Grizzly 1029z!
My shop is fairly small, but I do have enough room to work comfortably that's for sure. I haven't had a problem with the cord or the dc ducts on the floor. I'm usually on the other side of the ductwork anyway!

Cool, I bought the Harbor Freight 2 H.P. unit, needs better bags only comes with 30 micron , but it's a start , trying to figure out a set up of tools and then the piping, for now i'm just gonna use flex hose at each tool when needed till I get a perm. set up. I also bought the JET AFS-1000B air scrubber, my garage/shop is 24wX22d heated, AC this spring goes in.Mines a complete total MESS right now lol tools all over a daunting task figuring out how to organize it all lol The 78 ford step-side f-150 project truck sitting in there dont help either lol (lost interest, it's a ford) Chevy man myself. I'll sell it and then I can get myself organized.
It's a pretty cool group here hope you enjoy.:)

Hi,
You're lucky, my shop is on 10' x 18' so you have over twice the sq. ftge. I do - I sure would like that! The Nikon D50 is a great camera - I have the Nikon Coolpix 4500.
So, my shop is smaller and my camera is too, but - I am getting a new Chevy Silverado this month!!:) I ordered a 2007 Silverado Classic 2500HD 6.6L Duramax CC/SB in mid-September and it is supposed to arrive here in a couple of more weeks. I got the truck with the main purpose of pulling a 5th wheel(thus the diesel engine) - haven't got the 5th wheel yet though.
Thanks again for the welcome.

Hi,
The ductwork in my workshop is all 4". I used the s/d pipe from HD for all the main runs and 'flex-hose' for the drops to the equipment. I remember being totally confused by all the different calculations and formulas etc. for ductwork sizing etc. But, this works perfectly for me - no problems at all!

I think I can twist our Brand Managers arm to hook all the participants up with a free hat and shirt. So I need to figure out what the top 3 get beyond the promised shirt and hat to differentiate them.
I'll be contacting you guys as soon as I figure this out.
Just wanted to post before this got to far past the end of Oct.
Josh
Thanks Josh & Ridgid. Congrats to everyone:D
I sent my shirt size and address. Ridgid has a solid set of WWing products.

Here's a photo I just came across recently of my old basement shop from 1984/85 when I was restoring an old house. I remember I was working 6-12s on the job and all my off time was put into fixing this 27 room home up over about 7 years. There was of course no Ridgid WW tools back then. Most of the stuff is Craftsman made by Emerson (I guess) in the early 1980s.
In the photo starting in the foreground is my WW bench which I still have.
To the right mostly out of view is my 10" RAS which is still with me and I have done the upgrade to the guard to. On the left in front of one of the fireplace foundations is a 6" jointer. On the far wall is a combination Craftsman/Snap-On/MAC tool chest which I still have. The Craftsman 10" TS w/steel wings is long gone, as is the lathe and bench in the far right corner. The workmate (circa 1974) I still have and it is 10x better than any one they have made in recent years. Out of view is a 12" BS which I still have and am hoping to replace soon, and my 15" DP which is still with me and working fine.

The photo only shows about a quarter of the basement. I had loads of room to work on stuff and I had plenty of projects in various stages of completion going on to keep it filled up :) .
Nice shop Bob, Makes it look like 100 years ago being in black and white.
Good news everyone, your stuff should be on its way soon if not already. Let me know when you get it.

Josh,
I really think you should add a little more orange to your shop.
I stayed out of this and enjoyed ALL the shops.
My shop has the old gray like the TS24241 for starters.
Thanks for the show. I loved looking.

I only have a basement shop atm and cannot wait till I can build something outback or just move to new house .I have about 16x 22 in basement tho.It is all open and only 1/4 is for storage and thats on other side of basement.I hate the 7ft 2inch cieling tho. I mean come on I am 6 ft 4inch now and bump my head in 3 spots due to ductwork lol. I cant wait till i get new shop in any case. grats to winners and all the shops looked good.

My workshop (18' X 22') under construction is shown here:

The building is complete and was first used for an emergency car engine removal and repair. I'm a diy'er and beginning woodworker and I'm just now getting to use my tools, I'll post some interior pictures next week. But, they will pale in comparaison to what has already been posted.

Looks like it has some good potential dwc. It looks good and I'm sure will work well for you. Did you run a seperate electrical panel out there I assume?

Thanks wwsmith. I installed a 60amp subpanel. Just ran a water line and installed a utility sink this past weekend. And, of course the cable TV has been installed.
Off of the subpanel I have 2-20amp breakers and used 12 guage wire with GFI recepticles.
The building itself meets the South Florida Building code.

To be the new spae for shop.Did a little haggling with the wife for a lil more space so i can store wood also. I am thinking of moving the bandsaw by the planer though. Hope all can see the legend .......
Guys... Thanks for being patient. If it was me sending out the gifts you would have had them pronto. Unfortunately I have to ask someone else who has to ask someone else. I have resubmitted the request to have them sent out. The top 3 got their "grand" prizes within 2 weeks. The rest of you will get your stuff even if I have to ask the person to send it 3 times.

Oy... no hats. Alright one more round. I am glad the t-shirts are there. I will try to figure out the hats thing when I get a chance. This way we spread out the love over the whole year ;-)
We may be able to send those out from here actually so may not take as long.

WKent, can you give some details on that cyclonic separator you've got hooked up to your shop vac>? Is that home built or did you pick that up somewhere? Details please!

woodjunkie - The cyclone is a CV06 mini cyclone from www.clearvuecyclones.com attached to a Flotec sump basin from the BOB and powered by a Ridgid 5hp vac.
I have the Ridgid dust collector ducting under the table saw extension and blast gates at each machine. The cyclone does a great job of collecting dust from all machines and keeps the vac filter from clogging.

Ok guys.. for I walked the hats along with another surprise down to shipping and even a trip by international shipping for the 3 Canadians.
Hats should be on their way to the 10 I mentioned in the winners post.
Josh
I bought a new digital camera over the weekend and when it warms up I plan on doing some better pictures of the shop to post. This time I will pull them out to there work locations instead of having them pushed against the wall. Josh, I was happy with the shirt and was just joking about the hat. But I will wear it with pride.
I'm a man of my word. I told you guys I was sending a shirt and hat... you guys are gettin em. Plus a little something extra to promote safety.

Wow - You know a real marketing genius could not have planned this any better. So some were a little disturbed by the delay, but Ridgid had an opportunity to touch customers over sevaral months with wearables and such that they will wear proudly. Each time a package arrived, we were reminded of how much we value the Ridgid products.
It's almost like Josh couldn't have planned the timing better. I for one enjoyed getting a Ridgid package every once in awhile. The shades were a great top off.
Josh - The stuff is awesome and will be worn proudly. You know though, maybe you want to keep sending some more stuff...for marketing purposes anyway. You have my address! Thank you. DCG
Thanks Josh I recieved my hat and surprise today. The surprise won't do me much good since I have to wear glasses all the time. The wife liked them though so she will must likely claim them.
Well I guess I missed out on the shirts & hats.
Thats ok I am not much on those anyway. I already have a brand type hat that I like to wear.
I do enjoy dropping by here once in a while though.
Thanks

Got my hat and surprise in the mail Monday. Thanks again. As I mentioned in another thread, I just converted to contacts after wearing glasses for many years so can't have enough extra safety glasses for the boy and myself now.
