Router owners - do you find that 2 1/4 hp is enough power? Or do you think a 3 1/2 hp is more suitable if a person was to only own one router?

It really depends on the types of work you'll do with it. 2-1/4HP is sure not a toy and serves well for most users. The big 3-1/2 models are for super duty work where lots of material needs to be removed fast. It's more the quality of construction of the router and the useful features that matter.

2 1/4 hp is plenty escpially for hand held. For super duty table use w/ big bits(such as panel raisers) go w/ a 3 1/2 horse fixed base. A 3 1/2 horse router is big for hand held. My Milwaukee 5625 handles well for it's size but ultimately it went in the table and a I use either my 1617 fixed/plunge base kit or my d handle 1618evs(rarely use the d handle but sometimes I pirate the motor from it to use in my plunge or fixed base if I feel I need the soft start and variable speed).
