I have an unheated shop and its getting pretty darn cold here in Canada as December approaches. Should I take my cordless tool battereies in the house? If so, what is the reasoning behind it?

Bring 'em inside if it gets below freezing in your shop. Also, when the batteries are cold the performance will be dismal. When not using them for a while run them down in a tool. If you are going to be using them in a week or two, you can slow the self-discharge down by keeping them in the refrigerator (not freezer...see earlier remark.) Just let them warm up a little before using them.
