2 half HP motors combined ?????

I was wondering if you could wire 2 half HP motors together and mount them onto a platform in order to have a 1hp motor.Would the 2 motors have the torque of a 1hp motor and both pull as one or am I just bolwing in the wind? If this would work you can use 2 3/4hp motors and have a 1 1/2hp motor. If you can figure out a way to mount it up. What do you think?????.......Donny
