How about a small drum sander. The ones on the market today cost as much or more than my table saw. While most of us would love to have one of the big sanders, I doubt that we are willing to spend $800+ to get one. If anyone could come out with one 10" or 12" wide with an open side that would allow you to sand both sides of a 20"-24" wide board and keep the cost under $500, I bet there would be a good market for it.
