It "could" be a couple of things...

Hard drive space, swap file size, fragmentation levels....

Do you know how full your hard drive(s) is(are)?
A system with a full drive will run slower than one with enough free space...
Did you delete anything lately or run anything like disk cleanup etc.?
If you did the extra space cleared up may account for a noticeable increase in performance.

The default (assuming you run Windows) configuration lets Windows dynamically resize the swap file according to needs and hard drive space...
There is a possibility that Windows may have either increased or decreased your swap file size which has resulted in increased performance.

Have you defragmented your drive(s) lately?
If you have then that could account for a performance increase.

Of course these are just educated guesses and your increased performance may not have anything to do with what I've mentioned...

What OS (version of Windows?) are you using and when was the last update done to it? Sometimes newer system files can solve problems...

If none of that has anything to do with it then I would agree with everyone else and say that it is most likely because of the spring thaw...

                  One last thing....

Re: why is my computer so fast all of a sudden?

Well, I know some ways to make a computer run faster:

                          Add memory.

                          Remove Norton

                          Run Disk Cleanup.

                          Scandisk and Defrag.

Keep loose wires out of the processor fan.

Remove spyware and viruses running in the background - this includes curing Zombie-itis, which is when your computer is being used as a zombie from a hidden partition by porn dealers.

Get rid of Yahoo! or at least use something to remove the files that are unnecessary but slow down a computer. (Redclientapps.)

Clear your print spooler of unprinted files.

Keep a minimum of 15% of your hard drive free.

Check if your ISP upped your connection speed.

Re: why is my computer so fast all of a sudden?

I don't follow a lot of what goes on in the IT security world, we have whole teams dedicated to security where I work. I do get wind of some of the really big news stories that pop up on the internet though. It's possible a recent shut down of a bot network could cause a sudden performance gain. As was mentioned, if your computer was an infected "zombie" and the bot master's server was shut down by the feds or neutralized by security protocols, your computer might have been freed from their control. This is all speculation though since I can't know for sure if you had an infected system.
