  • I was down in a crawlspace today...

...at a duplex. Was called in for one side, another story and irrelevemt. Went into the crawl looking for an access. Happened to glance across at the other side's piping and wtf? Here's 3" abs going to 4" pvc, except it's not. It's poruing out on the ground. Hose clamps are visible on the ends of the pipes but there is about a 2" gap between them and wastewater is just running out into the crawl.

I wiggle over there and take a closer look; used to have a 3x4 fernco. All that is left is two hose clamps and the little bit of rubber directly under the still-in-place clamps. Judging from the rat turds everywhere and the gnaw marks on the remaining rubber, it was EATEN BY RATS!
This is my reminder to myself that no good will ever come from discussing politics or religion with anyone, ever.

That's hard times there. When there's so little trash and crumbs around that you just say "Screw it! Let's just eat the rubber coupling!"

Maybe there was such a bountiful harvest for the rats under that rental, the rats figured chewing through the rubber was the easiest way to get to. If tenants there are anything like they live here, that is probably the most likely scenerio.

I have seen large amounts of fernco unshielded couplings under structures, not a single one touched.
I can't figure out what is going on with your rat?

I bet the rats sensed some moisture around the fernco, and started to gnaw through in hopes to get a water source.

I used to do pest control and have crawled into many attics and crawl spaces. The rat may not have actually eaten the thing. He or she may have just bitten it off and taken it away for some material for a nice nest for the youngsters. I have seen rats build nesting material out of some very strange materials.
