im the same way i dont like working for neighbors .i tell them i cant do side work ,i can but dont want to because of the liability .
a older neighbor came knocking one night saying she hears water running in the wall . the house is on a slab and the copper cold water line going to the tub runs in the concrete ,well there was a pin hole leak just out side the slab on sone very green copper . i was able to solder a new pipe on it and was going to say good night when she asked if i could re run all the pipes . i said i cant no side work and liability and that this did not fall under that to help her out tonight . i said if she wants to have plumbers come in to give a price i can be there to see how they will do it .
she asked how much her bill was for my work i said nothing for a neighbors ,she gave money and she said take it . i got home and it was $500

Charging less does not mean more call volume it just means you have to work harder to reach your goals.

                Re: Too high

Price shopping is one thing, but depending on the reason it's usually just a cheapskate trying to find the lowest price.

And piss on those kind of people, they can go to hell. They value nothing more than money so screw them.

Funny how much a house cost nowdays, and how little people are willing to spend to keep it up. I price shop for parts, not installers. Call me weird, but I think something well done, shouldn't be free. Or even close to it. Hell, when I get a new tattoo, I sure as HELL don't price shop.

                  Re: Too high

I don't mind price shopping, to an extent. If the people calling are respectful and open to suggestion then I'll give them a reasonable price. If they call, get demanding or take on any kind of demeaning airs, the price goes way up. I've decided that I've missed out by being a plumber in a time when a good plumber isn't referred to as "Sir," My customers certainly don't have to defer to me or accept my judgment on the jobs they've hired me to do, but the ones who don't will always pay more.
No, it's not rocket science, it's plumbing and unlike rocket science it requires a license.
