  • Emergency exercise

Here's a little test to determine how prepared you are regarding your first aid kit.

    1. Go to where you usually use power tools or sharp instruments.
    2. Wrap your dominate hand in tape to immobilze it. This simulates a hand that is incapacited due to injury.
    3. Now go to your first aid kit to get what you need to stop the bleeding.

Was your kit in an accessible location?
    Was it properly stocked?
Were the supplies easy to get with only one working hand?

It is easy to mount a first aid kit in a manner that the uninjured can use. But, how many times have you needed to get to these items when you are not injured?

Plan for the worst, hope for the best.

we try to keep 72-hour kits packed in backpacks in our cars and our home. The trick is to keep them updated.

Gosh that is a tough question off the top of my head. Usually we will have a crank radio with light, water, granola bars, water, whistle, first aid kit, matches, contact info, cash, candles, survival blanket, cheap multi-tool, parachute rope, paper and pencil, MREs, baby wipes, couple trash bags, medications, emergency medical info.

Then of course the home one has quite a bit more. Part of this is because I hunt out on the Alaskan Tundra where you don’t see anyone else for two weeks at a time. It gives you a lot of time to think about what you wished you had brought.
