Re: Take care of your back

    THE WIF,

What would an x ray of my back in its current state show?
The DR. ordered one (I'll get the findings Thursday) and she siad it won't show much but we have to start with that before an MRI.

I'm assuming an x ray will show if I have ruptured a disk sincee its bone but the x ray will not show whats going on with the muscles.

I'm not "paunchy" by any means, in fact I could stand to gain 20-30lbs

Ultimately it comes down to me not taking care of my body and doing the exercises that I was told to do. Just like when we complain about customers not doing what we advise them to do. This is why I'm pi$$ed at myself. It's my own fault and I could have easily prevented it by doing what I was told by a professional.
As a Student Physical Therapists Assistant's husband, I have a little story. My dad was almost medically discharged from the army a long time ago for back pain. He went to one specialist as a last resort and the guy looked at him and gave him a list with some ab exercises to do and he had to come back in 2 months. Well my dad thought the guy was off his rocker but did the exercises anyway. 2 months later he goes back and has no back pain of any kind and rarely has any at all now. Every time he has hurt his back, it was because he was lifting wrong or to that effect. Pilaties is a great core workout exercise and is not girly at all. In fact it was originally designed for SEALs.

I've fallen off the wagon with the working out and can feel a huge difference for the negative. I'm back on the wagon though and am starting to feel a lot better even though I'm currently not where I used to be. Best of luck Gene. Remember to talk to a doctor before going into a workout while in pain, a back muscle spasm might a serious nerve problem.

Re: Take care of your back

          inner disc deveation.

that was the diagnosis for me in montreal.

took a couple of years no work it out. it still gives me problems every once in a while.

i stretch during my morning coffee. i've seen on TV that the asian factory workers are big into the warm-ups before they begin work.

a PT taught me how to strengthen my inner core muscles. i also try to remember to sit up straight. don't slouch.

i'm not trying to brag but, i have a 6 pack, i'm 43, and i don't take the time to do crunches or sit-ups.

          it's an all day exercise.

actually looking at your stomach muscles when you tense or tighten them up will allow you to become conscious of the different muscle groups.

suck in that gut, even when just walking, sitting, taking a shower/poop, whenever.

i once heard this; the secret to a strong back, is a strong stomach.

hope you heal fast and heal well Gene.

Re: Take care of your back

Thanks everyone. My back is much better now. One week ago today it was a 10 on the pain scale and now when it's at its worst its about a 4.

Got the results of the X-Ray today and thank God I didn't rupture a disk.

It was a slow week this week and I only had one job that couldn't be put offf. I had a friend and my wife do all the work. I just sat like a bump on a log directing. It's so against my nature to watch others work, I had to get involved. After the job my wife "politely" reminded me to back off.

I've been trying to teach her for some time now but I always end taking over (I think it's an OCD type thing) so she never ends up doing any hands on stuff.
The plan for this week is to continue to use my friend and Candy will be doing all the assessing and implementing. I'll just be there for back up and advise.

Glad to hear you recovered. I'd work at 50% for the next couple weeks till you manage to be pain free.

These next few months are when you're going to be most vulnerable for another back injury.

The worst part is that these next few months are our busy season. Luckily I have a few friends that are pretty much brothers and they have given me their word that they have my (no pun intended) back.

Re: Take care of your back

Ah!!!! Back problems, yep I'd say most of us has been there. I just now saw this thread, good luck on your recovery Gene.

I went for a full boat physical exam yesterday, part 2 on Wednesday, that will be my stress test, heart and eye exam. Yesterday was all my lab results and bend over, cough real hard, you all get the picture.

I had a great talk with my Doctor, I'm in pretty good condition, so my results say at this point. I have been battling high blood pressure for 10 yrs now, that is down to 134 over 80, thus I'm extremely happy about that part.

But since I was 18, my height has shorten 1 1/2", gravity kicked in and thats not the only place. Ya too much info there.

I have been walking an hour - 1 hour 15 min. 6 days out of the week, this alone has improved my health condition. I can certainly say my joints and back is much stronger, this I will recommend to anyone, of course get your doctor permission first, this will mean an exam.

My day off from walking, is weight lifting, maybe this is why my back is stronger, more so than the walking, but I'm sure they both contribute to a healthier me. I'm getting older and I'm going thru some life changes and thats why I am trying to keep my body healthier. I told my kids, in 2 years, I hope to do a marathon, they laughed. I said we'll see about that boys, so wants to join me, no one said anything....

Back trouble is bad! You have to have been there - it is almost impossible to imagine the pain.

I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery.
