Whats the deal. If your threading black pipe with a set of lets say 1'' pipe dies and then use the same dies on stainless steel pipe, will the stainless get contaminated with the carbon from the black and start to rust.

Not a chance................. The stainless doesn't lose its chemical composition by being worked on.

just wipe any SURFACE contamination off.

      Re: contamination

you shouldn't be using the same dies for stainless and for steel.

the oil should wash away the "fines" that are cut.

is the stainless just rusting at the cut threads? how is the rest of the pipe and how about the factory threads?

      rick.

or is this just a hypothetical question?

Guess it depends on where you are and the standards that must be met. We are not allowed to cut CS and SS on the same machines. We can't even use regular old duct tape or magic markers or Sharpie® pens on SS; have to use stuff verified as chloride free so it won't affect the SS.
"When we build let us think we build forever. Let it not be for present delight nor for present use alone. Let it be such work that our descendants will thank us for, and let us think, as we lay stone upon stone, that a time is to come when these stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say, as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, "See! This our fathers did for us."
