Anyone else hear that Hershey Chocolate is leaving the USA and moving to mexico? If true another loss to our country and economy.

Yes, I heard something about that, but it was last spring.

Did some searching and here is a news article on it.

    And then there is this:

But there's no question that the company is sputtering .... Market share is down, sales are flat, and the stock price is at a three-year low. And separate investigations are under way in the United States and Canada about a price-fixing scheme among Hershey and its competitors.

With the dollar at a historical low against most world currencies, and many supermodels refusing to be paid in dollars, wouldn't you think that manufacturing jobs in the U. S. are more cost effective and that some of the jobs that have left would now come back?

Maybe wages is not the real reason for outsourcing of U. S. jobs.

      Just a thought.

It's only part of the story I think. They wish to avoid EPA and OSHA and all the other "nuisance agencies and regulations" (as companies see them) too.

Also, since many traditionally American owned companies are now owned in part or altogether by foreign investors, there is little if any incentive or sense of patriotism in the Boardroom that might tend to keep the companies roots planted here in the US.

Theres enough Illegal Aliens in this country who would be more than happy to go to work for $4.00 an hour, so why in the world would any Manufacturer want to spend all that money to move and rebuild.

Because that is three or four times what they are willing to pay.

here is a slightly different response from Snopes.com

              http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/hersheys.asp

from the link "In February 2007, Hershey's announced it would be cutting more than ten percent of its workforce and closing some of its U.S. plants. It expects to do away with about 1,500 jobs over the next three years from its current workforce of more than 13,000 and also plans to reduce the number of manufacturing lines it operates by almost a third. The company is building a new facility in Monterrey, Mexico, that it says will be focused on both low-value added products and on emerging markets, and it is setting up a joint manufacturing venture in China with Lotte Confectionery of South Korea."

Hershey already pulled out of Nova Scotia last year. They had been making chocolate in Halifax for like 70 years, even before Hershey bought out the plant from the original owner. Heard they transferred the production to Mexico.
