Manhole covers vary in size and weight depending upon the location. During my years as a Telco Lineman in NYC I pulled plenty of those covers and inner pans to work below. I'm willing to bet the outer manhole covers weigh close to four hundred pound and I can't imagine anyone stealing those in particular but in many places the covers weigh much less and are a target. Leaving any manhole open poses all sorts of hazards to drivers, pedestrians and animals. They can be spot welded shut but a good shot with a hammer breaks the weld. I hope this trend quicky stops and part of the solution would be to prosecute the folks buying these things.

I don't know the weight, but they did mention they were getting a whopping $10 for them at the scrap yards

Hmmmm.... you say hitting those welds with a hammer will break them?

How big a hammer does it have to be?

Somehow I can't imagine going through all that work (and risk) for a mere $10, but I never could figure out what makes petty thieves do what they do.

I've noticed a few covers that appear to me hard rubber... I think Corning is on a budget or something like that.
