Stretching and diet are very important. You can build some good strength with an active job, but muscle imbalances can occur, which causes aches and pains and even worse injuries.
I know a guy that has been doing drain cleaning for 30+ years and always used a drum machine. He is pretty strong since he can maneuver the Spartan 2001 pretty easy it seems, but he doesn't seem to be in too good of shape (by looking at the way he walks). It might of been from something else, but carrying that drum up and down stairs for 30+ years too many times without enough rest (days off) and not enough good food probably hurt him more than helped him.
