1 toilet for every 6,849 people on Inauguration Day
    December 10, 2008 - 1:07pm

    Adam Tuss, WTOP Radio

WASHINGTON - When you gotta go, you gotta go.

But will there be enough places to "go" on Inauguration Day?

Crowd estimates for Jan. 20 range between 1 and 5 million people.

Metro is planning to carry upwards of 1 million riders itself on Inauguration Day, but the transit agency says it will shut down all of its public restrooms due to security concerns.

Instead, 146 portable restrooms will be set up outside of selected rail stations.

Even if the transit agency carries 1 million people on Jan. 20 -- and that could be a conservative estimate -- that means there would be one bathroom for every 6,849 customers.

The National Park Service tells WTOP it is awaiting word from the Presidential Inaugural Committee to see how many portable restrooms need to be set up on the National Mall.

"They are in the process of formulating that plan and we will support what they ask of us," Park Service spokesman Bill Line says.

Regardless of how many portable restrooms will be available, most museums on the Mall plan to be open on Inauguration Day. Regular hours for the museums are between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

As of right now, the Renwick Gallery on 17th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue is the only museum scheduled to be closed, due to its proximity to the White House.

Whether or not the museums are ready for a potential "restroom crush" on Inauguration Day is a different story.

WTOP is Washington, DC's #1 radio station and is all about News. They do a wonderful job with traffic and weather too.

FM 103.5 (Main transmitter in NW DC)

FM 103.9 - Frederick, MD area

FM 107.7 - Northern, VA area

    Around the world - http://www.wtopnews.com

Listen to streaming audio - http://www.wtopnews.com/?sid=599366&nid=162
You can get a free player and normally any current version of Windows Media Player works fine.

Some time back they ran on AM 1500 KHz and they were 50,000 Clear Chanel. Too bad those days are gone. Even during the day they had great coverage. Now they have great coverage for the Washington, DC area but not much down in Richmond, VA or PA like they did. At night many people all over the east coast area could pick them up pretty well.

Even if it was McCain, I still don't see the big ordeal, but without a doubt, it's history in the making.

Going to be lots of urine spilled on the streets of this event.Attachment

That's not enough to meet plumbing code for a public event. Who gets written up for the violation???

Not to speak of them shutting down their regular restrooms and providing porta-pots in their place all because they might become a security problem. Do those porta-pots have H&C running water and soap available?

I'm so excited about the event I just can't sleep at night. The MOST historic event in the history of the nation is about to take place at the paltry sum of about 150 million dollars. It's OK that banks are failing, people are loosing their jobs and houses, because the Messiah is only hours away from being ordained and he and his deciples will make everything better, overnight. I don't mind, in fact look foreward to the daily news because I can hear the word Obama about every six seconds. The bells will ring across the land. Obama, Obama, Obama. Praise the lord for bringing us our savoir.

On a serious note. With all the expectatations placed on him I can't imagine taking the job. How many mistakes before they start climbing up his back?

Perfect reply NHMaster. Personally I could care less about the inauguration. To me it is just more wasted tax dollars. Just another reason we can never get out of debt.

As we stand today the debt amounts to 17,000 dollars for every household in America. How much more can we afford? How much will be passed on to our children? or do we just print more worthless currency and hope for the best. I suppose it doesn't matter as long as all the politicians get their paycheck and retirement.

There's no toilet paper around, shoots your idea of safe ground
But there's no room, no space to clean what's running down,
You're out of luck and there's good reason to care,
Your arse is stuck and you're not moving anywhere.

I think it is a lot more than that
the national debt is $10,640,931,547,816.63 at the time I posted this.
                            http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/
The estimated population of the United States is 305,490,409
so each citizen's share of this debt is $34,832.29.

The National Debt has continued to increase an average of
$3.41 billion per day since September 28, 2007!
so I read that as a family of four would owe $139,329.16
