(Nogales, AZ) -- A suspected drug smuggler is dead after accidentally shooting himself during a run-in with border patrol agents and police in Nogales. Authorities attempted to pull over 21-year-old Tucson resident Edgar Alva late Tuesday night after receiving a report that his car had been loaded with marijuana just west of the Mariposa Port of Entry. Police say Alva fled to the parking lot of the Wal-Mart Super Center in Nogales and bolted from the vehicle with a nine millimeter handgun. The gun reportedly went off as officers tried to apprehend him near the store's main entrance. Alva was shot in the upper torso and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead around midnight. Police ended up finding about 100 pounds of marijuana in Alva's car.
