    Re: Everyone should be Scared

I'll have to depend on the experts.
There's the rub....there are none, which is why we are
    where we are today.

    ...forward thinking politicians...
Are you even allowed to write forward-thinking and politicians in the same sentence?

The same people that made these "lets ship our jobs out of the country", decisions in the first place.

If no one could be re-elected then they would not have to worry about it, they could concentrate on the job they were elected to do and stop spending have their term campaigning.

What would happen? At worst they would have to sit out a term before they could be re-elected, would that be so bad? If the constituents want to stay with a party they can elect another person in his place from the same party, if not they have an level playing field (no incumbency) on which to elect another.

With regards to OSHA/EPA, etc. I think that it is an individual countries choice.
If the working people of this country did not push for this for many years, you still would not have OSHA or the EPA here in the USA.

The Occupational Safety & Health Act was signed into law in 1970, but the story behind it's birth goes back to before Kennedy.

So yes it was our countries' choice to have this protection for its citizens, but that is here in a more-or-less free society. But knowing how difficult it was to get into place here, how can people in places where they are run over with tanks ever hope to have anything equivalent to OSHA or the EPA?

If we did not import oil last year, we would have a trade deficit 1/5 of the size.
If we had a government or corporations that were less greedy and more forward thinking, we would have solved this problems in the 80s after the first oil crisis, but we have a bunch of ME!, ME!, ME! people, and not enough US people. Not as in socialism kind of us, but in a help your fellow Americans kind of US.

          Re: Everyone should be Scared

I don't know who is to blame for our current situation. However, I don't believe it was from tax-cuts and I don't believe we can spend our way out of it. My gut tells me at the root of it is the "Toxic Assets" the banks are stuck with which cause a domino's effect with our economy. What bothers me is I don't believe anyone is being held accountable for it.

Barney Frank was on the House Banking Committee and a major supporter of Fannie Mae. Between ACORN and Barney Frank they forced Fannie Mae to accept less than stellar loans. From there, greedy banks took off and made a ton of money buying and selling loans. Part of the story which is not told is an executive with Fannie Mae,Herb Moses was at one time considered by Barney Frank to be his spouse. I would be curious to know why Frank never disclosed the relationship while he was dealing with Fannie Mae? He was already out and was introducing Moses publicly as his spouse but suddenly it slips his mind. With all of the above said what are the consequences? Fannie Mae gets bailed out, Barney Frank remains on the House Banking Committee and ACORN gets part control of the $4,100,000,000 set aside for low income housing. How much longer must we reward failure?

Mark, I' sure no economic expert myself but I think we are in this mess as a result of much more than the housing crisis. We rewarded every politician who either stoodby and did nothing or voted for NAFTA, we rewarded our government officials for looking the other way as twenty million illegals poured into our country. We have Freedom of Speech and the Right To Vote but where does that lead us today? What as the consequences for personal responsibility gone wrong? Banks fail: government bailouts, big business fails"government bailout. Individuals buy homes they can't afford:No problem the taxpayers will pickup the slack through government bailouts. Run up your credit cards and can't pay? No problem, they will simply raise my rates to make up the difference. Rewarding failure is common place now but it will be the death of us.

I've got to say anyone with even a little money to risk should be out buying foreclosures right now. The market is low enough I don't believe you could get hurt and those being foreclosed on will need homes to rent. The home we bought in Las Vegas was around 40% of the selling price 2-years earlier.

On another note, I've stopped my subdivision for now and I am looking at strategic trades instead until I can figure out the tax implications. Oh well, welcome to the new economy.
