  • 1500 miles in 1 hour and 45 minutes = ??? miles/hour

me, my Tammy, and my son (Vince jr)are trying to figure this one out.

i'm sure it's simple math but i'm too simple to figure it out right now.

i know that the aircraft is travelling at 14.28 miles/min, but that's where i get stumped.

    wait, 14.28 X 60 (minutes) = 857.14 miles/hour???

i think (i know) i'm doing something wrong.

    Vince

i realize i haven't accounted for take-off and landing speeds. i just looking for a average speed.

      that blows me away.

i guess N.A.I.T. taught me a thing or two.

857 miles/hour average. this means that the aircraft have to travel just a little bit faster than that to come up with that number.

      that's amazing.

        The 10¢ answer is:

"In dry air at 20 °C (68 °F), the speed of sound is 343 meters per second (1,125 ft/s).
This equates to 1,236 kilometers per hour (768 mph) or about one mile in five seconds."

vince from my experience, most commercial aircraft seem to fly at about 625mph or so. also depending on the jet stream, the return leg is slower or faster.

longest flight i've done is thailand 17 hours

          2 full crews.

Flew from Oakland to DC in a C-47 (DC-3). 12 hours of bumps and vibration in a plane built in the '30's.
