  • Speak For Yourself

Looks like the White House is collecting information and e-mail addresses of people who are against the President's health care plan and let their opinions be heard. I just want to take this opportunity to repeat that I am in complete agreement with our President's plan to socialize health care and anything else he wants! I can't wait to pay higher taxes to insure everyone who does not have insurance including illegals ( I just love them illegals). Furthermore I welcome the opportunity to pay higer taxes so folks who are tired of driving their current cars can trade up for something new and get a nice break from the government. You guys better wise up, they are taking names and addresses, remember this ain't the USA, well it is or at least it used to be. Josh, Burn all the records, FAST!!!!

No to defend Obama (I don't care really) but... when Hitler was penniless he presented himself as a socialist and his manifesto of 1925 reads like an improved version of Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto. Things changed even before he reached for power.

A lot of people are confused by the name of the Nazi party. The Nazi Hitler we know from the history of WW2 was as socialist as Democratic Republic of North Korea is democratic, or a republic, for that matter. He initiated the anti-Comintern which opposed the USSR and communism.

His career was funded and supported by the big business (including some American banks) and a big chunk of German aristocracy.

              You know what else?

              He's a nazi!

              and a socialist!

and he wasn't even born in this dang burn country.

Come on guys, I've been trying my best to avoid these political discussions, but this is just getting ridiculous.

I'm pasting an article from ABC news that may introduce some reason into this hysteria, so it will likely be branded as NAZI propaganda by the right wing.

              Good luck with the paranoia.

As ABC News’ Rick Klein was first to report, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, was quite taken aback by White House Director of New Media Macon Phillips’s request that if citizens “get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy,” they “send it to flag@whitehouse.gov."
In a White House blog, Phillips said he was trying to stem the flow of “disinformation," and Linda Douglass, communications director for the White Houses Health Reform Office, appeared in a web video saying, "there are a lot of very deceiving headlines out there right now, such as this one, take a look at this one. This one says, ‘Uncovered Video: Obama Explains How His Health Care Plan Will Eliminate Private Insurance.’
Well, nothing can be farther from the truth. You know, the people who always try to scare people whenever you try to bring them health-insurance reform are at it again. And they’re taking sentences and phrases out of context, and cobbling them together to leave a very false impression."
In response, Cornyn wrote to President Obama that he’s concerned “about a new White House program to monitor American citizens' speech opposing your health care policies, and to seek your assurances that this program is being carried out in a manner consistent with the First Amendment and America's tradition of free speech and public discourse.”
The Texas Republican said it seemed “inevitable that the names, email addresses, IP addresses, and private speech of U.S. citizens will be reported to the White House. You should not be surprised that these actions taken by your White House staff raise the specter of a data collection program.”
And he suggested that if President Bush had “asked Americans to forward emails critical of his policies to the White House,” President Obama “would have been leading the charge in condemning such a program-and I would have been at your side denouncing such heavy-handed government action. "

Asked about Cornyn's letter on Thursday afternoon, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said, "nobody is collecting names."
The blog and tips email was because, Gibbs said, "we have seen, and as I've discussed from this podium, a lot of misinformation around health care reform. Some of it I think spread purposely. We have used on many occasions the Web site to debunk things that are simply not true. We ask people if they have questions about health care reform and about what they're hearing about its affects on them, to let us know and we'd provide them information to show that that wasn't true."
Continued Gibbs: "but nobody is collecting names."
Douglass responded in a statement that “We want to be sure people have the facts about health insurance reform that will lower costs, protect consumers from insurance regulations that deny them coverage and assure quality and affordable health care for all Americans."
Douglass also said that "We are not compiling lists or sources of information. We may post fact checks from time to time to be sure Americans know the truth about health insurance reform.”
Cornyn had asked the White House "to cease this program immediately" or at the very least "detail to Congress and the public the protocols that your White House is following to purge the names, email addresses, IP addresses, and identities of citizens who are reported to have engaged in 'fishy' speech."
When asked, Gibbs acknowledged that the White House is required by law to save all correspondence it receives.
"Obviously, the National Archives documents correspondence with the White House," he said.
Cornyn also asked if President Obama's "own past statements qualify as "disinformation'?" He cited as an example a clip from Douglass's 'Facts Are Stubborn Things" web video in which she said she sought to combat "disinformation."
"Is it 'disinformation' to note that in 2003 you said: 'I happen to be a proponent of a single-payer universal health care plan'?" Cornyn asked.
When asked today whether it is misinformation that in 2003 President Obama, then a state senator, supported a single-payer health care system, Gibbs suggested that since as a presidential candidate and president Mr. Obama has changed his position, and dropped his advocacy of single payer, the clips are misleading.
"If you look at the statements that have been put up on other Internet sites that splice a bunch of stuff together, and I think if you look at the answers that state senator, U.S. senator, and President Barack Obama has given on that," Gibbs said, "we hope to provide people with a full and accurate picture, not... only the words that opponents might want to see."

This is what Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas became alarmed about.

I think this thread is now in serious danger of being reported to the FED

in all seriousness though. Since this is getting close to being a "political" discussion lets remain respectful of those who are still in love with Obama. I'd love to let the discussion fly wide open as I have some major concerns about the direction our country is headed but we still need to keep this community even keel.

Once again... continue to talk to your friend, Educate each other, and let your senators and representatives know how you feel (respectfully)

                    Re: Speak For Yourself

I agree Josh. Comparing President Obama to Hitler is disrespectful to the American people. I'd rather we debate the facts having to do with policy, proposed legislation and actions. I have been in contact with my Congressman, and following my last communication to him, I have not nor do I expect a response. I think like most people that health care needs reform, I do not agree with what I have heard of democratic proposals. I don't want to lose my current coverage and I don't want to be taxed on these benefits. Today we hear there has been some good news on the jobless rate, and while any good news is better than bad we are hardly on the fast track to a stable thriving economy. Maybe some of get a little out of hand and overboard in these posts, but it is for good reason, we are concerned about our future, we are somewhat scared the wrong decisions will be made.

Since 9/11 (I still twitch when seeing that), what privacy and freedom of speech we had eroded dramatically. It was needed because we had a real and serious internal threat. But like this latest incident shows us, the feds are using the intel programs for personal gains.

It is not about the personalities or race of our leaders, but how long their puppet strings are. Do you really think Bush, Jr or Obama has ever had an original thought?

The last real leader was Bush, Sr. and he and Raygun took down the USSR without a shot fired.

GOP using paranoia to push reason out of health-care debate

                            8:54 am August 6, 2009, by Jay
The Obama White House has asked supporters of health-care reform for examples of emails that make allegations about reform that sound outlandish, fishy or misinformed. For example, that ObamaCare is going to force your grandpa to commit suicide.
That particular bit of misinformed hysteria is inspired by a useful provision in the bill that would let Medicare pay for the consultation if you decide to talk with your doctor about making a living will, the kind of document that might have prevented the Terri Schiavo fiasco. It would take a determined effort to turn that into a program designed to push old people off onto ice floes (fixed, thanks RW) to die, but that’s exactly what some on the right have done. (Mike Madden at Salon has a useful piece on the Five Big Lies about proposed health-care reform.)
The reasoning behind the Obama e-mail request is pretty simple: If you want to try to refute lies, you need to know what those lies are. And in the murky world of the Internet, new lies and distortions pop up constantly. “There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care,” Macon Phillips, the White House director of new media, wrote on his blog. “These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.”
However, opponents of reform have seized upon the request as a means to heighten the paranoia that has become their favorite weapon in this debate.
In a letter to the White House, GOP Sen. John Cornyn of Texas portrays it as program “asking American citizens to report their fellow citizens to the White House for pure political speech that is deemed “fishy” or otherwise inimical to the White House’s political interests.” He raises the spectre of a White House “data collection program” by which it can assemble “the names, email addresses, IP addresses, and private speech of U.S. citizens” opposed to reform. In other words, an enemies list. He also demands to know “what action … you intend to take against citizens who have been reported for engaging in ‘fishy’ speech?”
It’s a ludicrous suggestion, but it’s perfectly in line with the GOP strategy to use emotion, anger and fear as means to drown out debate, discussion and facts. It is the telling behavior of a movement that knows it will lose the debate on those grounds.
